Make-up Use by date
Posted by bee on 21/05/2010 at 12:01 amMascara’s do – I’d say probably 6 months and its time to replace when it becomes clumpy.
It depends on the storage conditions of your make up as to how long they may last; to hot or too cold can have adverse effects on all liquids (foundations concealers lip gloss) – they may split up in to their individual components similar to old paint.
Pressed powders would I suggest have perhaps the longest self life.
Some things are of course renewables like brushes over time, sponges powder puffs etc.
It is said that nail polishes last longer when stored refrigerated.

Guest21/05/2010 at 1:25 amI saw something on tv about this a year or so ago, they said every 12 months replace everything. Which is a good general guideline that can be a part of a spring clean.
Though I really like to get the most out of things before chucking them out, 20% used then in the bin? Yeah maybe!!
I don’t know if it’s coincidence or a sign of why I need make-up in the first place but the areas where I apply the most make-up have really bad skin, it’s not as smooth and close up it looks like little holes in my skin. *shrugs*
Just another reason to use less make-up! -

I think most posters are just concerned with the useful length of use for the product.
I am not sure that freezing makeup products in consumer freezers (-18°C) will “kill most bacteria”. It may actually damage some products (lipstick etc as well?) If your concern is contamination of the products I suggest you decant liquid products (foundation, concealer etc.) onto say a ceramic tile and use the product from there. Then the remainder in the bottle or tube remains contamination free. Wash your brushes frequently. This is what professional makeup-artists do as they use the same products on many people. Using brushes to apply lipsticks and lip gloss will also help if you are concerned about cross-contamination as well.

To kill most germs bacteria you have to use heat for a minimum period of time (>70C for 2minutes for most IIRC) however as you probably guessed that’ll wreck just about any product. (Pasturisation of milk is a good example of heat treating to kill bacteria/microbes/germs: http://www.raw-milk-facts.com/pasteurization_T3.html )
As Bambi said to prolong the life of products the best thing you can do is keep it sterile in the first place. Decant the liquids into/onto something that you can use it from there discarding any excess. Powders are not as much of a problem, but it can’t hurt to take a little out with a spatula or tap some out before using your brushes (I have little bottles of Eye shadow – thanks MAC! – I tap out a little each time I use them and use my brush to pick it up from the place I tapped it out to.)
Take care and have fun,

Guest13/12/2010 at 3:38 amxmss time is a great time for updating your cosmetics collection. many brands have gift sets available if you buy a certain amount of their products (say all purchases over $50) or a number of products (say buy three lip sticks). the gift sets usually contain a full range of their products – a lippy, mascara, a fragrance, some skin care products, a mini foundation, perhaps – and usually a bonus cosmetics bag (beats supermarket shopping bags
). some of these are avialble on-line (e.g. david jones, or the individual brand itself), so those of you a little shy on personal shopping can take advantage of that.
the total value of the individual items is usually far greater than the the amount you have bought to qualify. the brands are basically using this as a marketing ploy to get you to try a range of their products. so if you qualify for one of these sets now, you can use this as a reminder next xmas to update your collection.
those of you who are full time may find that the collection will not last you a full year, and you’ll need to top up various items. but those who only put on a face occasionally, this is a very economical way of getting a good range of products, at an affordable price, and is timely, in that you can then remember to throw out your old make up on a yearly basis at the very least, and beat the use by date. here is an example:
Quote:Choose your SHISEIDO Gift including your limited edition AKIRA Designer cosmetics bag
