  • Why isn’t TR recognised by society at large?

Posted by Adrian on 08/06/2010 at 1:18 am

    A topic suggested by Amy:

Problem statement: TR has a proven and growing role as a `Support and Social entity’ for the male to female gender diverse community. This is not currently recognised by society at large.

    Is this a problem?

If so, what can YOU do to help resolve it?

Or as Amy expressed it in another forum:

    Quote:
TR is not recognised by the mainstream society but that’s not the fault of TR, it’s that people dismiss the “T” in GBLT. It’s all about Gay and Lesbians. Their movement has reached the point of ‘Same Sex Marriage’. We are so far behind.

The Gender Centre of NSW doesn’t even list TR as a support network however it lists Seahorse (Please, I’m not Seahorse bashing, they have their role to play as well), just trying to make a point

The medical community always quotes ‘Seahorse’ as a support network when helping others, hey what about TR?

How many people here can honestly say that TR has helped and changed their lives? Shouldn’t we be recognised as a ‘Support and Social entity’ for the male to female gender diverse community? We certainly have the people here, from first time out to post-op. Our forums are filled with advice, personal stories and links that can help others. My issue is that both the medical and general GBLT community doesn’t seem to see that. I want to change that!!

Please note: This thread is about the male to female gender diverse community. No other labels should be applied in seeking solutions to this problem.

    Hi

I think that TR will become better know if TR seeks publicity.I remember S/H way back in the 1980s having articles published on their purpose, goals and activities in magazines , papers etc and I gather this was through them approaching media to get publicity. I may well be wrong here but in any event they had publicity… I think TR needs some people to go to media people and ask for publicity.Again, if this has been before Im wrong …
I notice that TR now has members in their 20s and this is a real step forward. For me I would have loved some thing like TR to have existed when I was in that age group ! With stories of younger and younger TG boys being recognised and having SRS etc I think TR would be doing a real service to our society to get publicity and encourage those who are young to come forward, as well encourage us older girls to do likewise

To me it would seem that TR has become a focal point in the tG scene for comment, news, views and may I add a site that could be far more than just a website. T-folks are finding some level of support around the nation but we need far more, could TR become that?

By forming an association there are several benefits as well as some negative ones, the first gain is the ability to procure sourcing from other providers for maintenance and admin. The second is that as an a ssociation we would be able to give government input from “Members” with more credability.

The loss is the controls that such a structure could bring but there are ways around or ways to limit those points.

    Then we could be TR.asn.au

I agree with Amys post on this subject The medical community in general are oblivious to TR. but the issue I see is perhaps broader. Im thinking about Transgendered aged care in particular and what resources are available to our community in this area. From my own observations the resorces are very skinny. Is this is a role TR would want to take up with medical and aged care providers? I would be very interested to see some views on this.
