Australian Human Rights Commission changing use of GLBTI
This email was sent to A Gender Agenda. I am sharing it here to enable as many people as possible to comment before the deadline of next Monday (email address at bottom)
Quote:Dear allThe Commission has recently heard concerns about our use of the term ‘GLBTI’ on our website and in public documents. Concerns have been expressed about:
· the connection between the terms ‘gay, lesbian and bisexual’ and the terms ‘transgender and intersex’
· the use of the term ‘transgender’ to represent a range of sex and gender diversities. The Commission is considering separating the part of our website regarding LGB issues from that regarding issues relating to sex and gender diversity.
Question One: Should the Commission have separate sections on our website for LGB issues and issues relating to sex and gender diversity?
The Commission has heard a suggestion that we should replace the term ‘sex and gender diversity’ (adopted during the Sex Files project) with ‘intersex and sex and/or gender diversity’.
Question Two: Should the Commission use the term ‘sex and gender diversity’ or the term ‘intersex and sex and/or gender diversity’?
Question Three: Are there any other comments that you would like to make about the Commission’s use of terminology in this area?
The Commission respects diversity of all kinds. We acknowledge the significance of terminology and that the use of inappropriate terminology can be disempowering. We appreciate any comments that you might like to provide to inform our use of the most appropriate and respectful terminology.
If you would like to make a contribution to this discussion, I would appreciate your response by return email prior to next Monday, 12 July 2010.
Thank you very much for your assistance. Please forward this email to anyone else who might be interested.
Kind regards
