On the other side of this, his daughter, Jamie Lee Curtis was born a hermaphrodite and was operated on as a baby to be female in gender. There is a great profile done on Tony Curtis that was viewed on SBS early last year.

i believe that the medical term now is “intersex”. this is a little unfortunate. i was with an intersex person at a trans event once and when the person i was with mentioned that they were intersex, a couple of people in the group who were obviously not, opened up their eyes and said, that they were too. not sure what the sbs documentary was about, but here is an interesting take:

The whole AIS concept is one worth exploring. I asked the endo at Monash was there any chance that a lot of transgenders actually had a form of AIS that had effected part of the brain rather than having a physical manifestation. He said that anything was possible but pointed out that while a genetic link has been clearly identified for AIS that there was no positive genetic link for those with normal male sex characteristics but who identify as female. He did say that they are open to ALL theories that anyone has because they don’t appear to be making much headway. A genetic link discovered in the last couple of years (in Brisbane I think) was based on very thin statistical evidence.

Other females who have been suggested as possible AIS have been Queen Elizabeth the First, Joan of Arc, and Julia Child (the subject of the movie Julie and Julia). There is a veiled reference to this in the movie (I hadn’t heard the rumour prior to seeing the movie which ironically was the first movie I went to alone as my true self). In the movie Julia is very tall and there is a poignant reference to her inability to have children. The South african athlete Casta Samenya (whose name I have probably just spelled utterly incorrectly) is touted as a possible AIS person but I haven’t heard confirmation of this. The only high profile person I am aware of who has come out about their AIS status is a British model whose name escapes me.

Beam us up Scotty! I hate making work for anyone Amanda but sometimes something turns up that I want to follow through on and when it occurs in a post that may already be a little off topic I’m at a loss as to what to do to maintain the thread. Am I just being too blonde? Your sage advice eagerly and affectionately anticipated…
