  Explores the dramatic event that launched a worldwide rights movement and revisits a time when homosexual acts were illegal throughout America. When police raided the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village on 28 June, 1969, gay men and women did something they hadn’t done before: They fought back. As the streets of New York erupted into violent protests and street demonstrations, the collective anger announced that the gay rights movement had arrived.

  Thanks Julie, my own personal media advisor! I’m still trying to catch up on other shows I’ve recorded.

  I’ve only heard small parts about the Stonewall event, so looking forward to this one.

  I watched this excellent doco tonight. Ah! the good old days !!! Luckily for me , in 1969 I didn’t realize that I was deviant, I just liked wearing feminine things!
  The harassment that gay and transgender people faced in the USA and here, the propaganda against the evil of “the homosexual” and the facade of decency by corrupt and criminal politicians and biased media , who used fear and ignorance to boost their popularity….at least things have changed now….hang on???? Tony Abbot as PM?, Pauline Hanson in the Upper House? David Oldfield and “the Parrot” on the radio? The homophobic crap that passes as rap and real life and cyber bullying of gay and transgender kids…perhaps little has really changed?
  These kinds of programs just confirm to me why we must stand up for ourselves and the rights of others to be their own selves, too much pain and fear has been felt and too much blood has been spilled to let the few freedoms that we have slip from our hands because of complacency.
