‘The BBC has argued that these characters were not intended to represent real transsexual women and that they were instead intended to “poke fun at the age old tradition of men dressing as women for laughs”. ‘

This skit was introduced as a response to the decision by Thai Airlines to employ kathoey as Air Hostesses. In addition to the unabashed denigration of transwomen, (for comedy) it also laughs at sexual assault – a man thrusting his genitals into the face of a woman.

I hope you are offended by this

It just goes to show how far we still have to go to be treated with any respect by even mainstream media. How the BBC could even think for a moment that any trans person would not be offended by this does my head in.
I have noticed that some acts at the melbourne comedy festival try and get their laughs by denigrating others. I think that type of humour has had it’s day. Trying it with racial overtones or with anti gay overones will get as many boos as laughs. I look forward to the day when they boo at ‘comedy’ denigrating us too. Maybe next century.
