Ideas for TransFormal 2012
Posted by Adrian on 06/06/2011 at 12:43 amQuote:I had a great time, I think the ratio of dancers to chatters points us (or me) to the fact that the band might be better served (or serve us better) if they didn’t need a volume control,One of the stunningly helpful things to come out of the copious survey feedback was to show that nearly everyone wants the band to be different but there are several conflicting views as to what different should be.
In my defense I will say that the band we had, wasn’t the band I selected (who had to pull out at the last minute). And 2 weeks before the event one doesn’t tend to be too critical of the credentials of the band that offers to save the day!
However I do agree that whilst many people want to dance..few people want to dance for 3 hours. So as executive producer I will be looking to change the mix quite radically next year – the goal being to keep the chatters in the GDR whilst hopefully satisfying the needs of the dancers.
Now all I have to do is find the band of my dreams in 6 months!!!!Rebecca replied 13 years, 10 months ago 3 Members · 9 Replies -

Guest06/06/2011 at 6:42 ami may be getting a little senile, but if i recall correctly, the first seahorse nsw ball some ten or more years ago did not involve any live band at all (please feel free to correct me), and again, if my recollection is correct, it was a pretty go hoedown (no pun intended). so maybe the thin king should go in the direction of querying if a live band is necessary at all, and there may be an economic windfall asssociated with that … passed on to the attendees in the way of a reduciton in ticket price, of course. just thinking aloud …
on contemplaating that first seahorse ball, one wonders how it ever evolved into the thing that it is now … again, just thinking aloud … not that there is anything wrong with whatever it is now, of course …

yes it has been a LONG time… but I believe you will find that Phil/Julia provided live entertainment from the start – in fact I vividly recall the trumpet playing.
I’ve also listened to the few who say “cut the entertainment we don’t need it” or “just give us a DJ/disco” but the reality is you can get that sort of evening anywhere. And I wanted TF to be something different – not your usual club offering with disco.
The overwhelming feedback from the survey is that the event was good value for money (98% said that), so there is little incentive to cut corners and make the event cheaper. In fact simple economics would indicate that a lower ticket price would even increase the demand further – and as we are at capacity that just doesn’t make sense.

Yes The sonic aces were Loud and not as good as the band last year but I think we will fail if we are seeking perfection in the music mix Just wont work for everyone . some cool Jazz numbers interspersed with some more contemporary dance Music would suit me just fine. Chatters and dancers would then all be satisfied perhaps ??

Hi,
I’ve already mentioned this to Amanda but maybe I’ll mention it here too.
I’ve been a sound engineer and production company professionally for 15 years in Sydney and I’ve worked at A LOT of functions over the years and I have worked with A LOT of bands and yes some I wish I hadn’t. I’m very hard to impress, out of the 100’s of bands I’ve worked with over the years I can only come up with one I could recommend for TF. They are called Big Radio Dynamite, They have a very wide variety of material they can do from Jazz and very low key dinner music, to funky groove, disco, dance and even some rock if necessary. They’re all classically trained very experienced musicians, I think they could do a good job knowing the situation they are going into. Personally I really hate DJ’s but thats just because I’ve had to baby sit so many of them over the years. My suggestion would be to have the band do soft dinner music set during the meal 7.30 – 8.30 , then another more upbeat set set 9.30-10.20, then a dance set from 10.45-11.40/11.45 and maybe a couple of encore songs if neccessary. That gives everyone a chance to chat, dance, go to the bar etc.
I’d like to take to the organisers to see them one night. I think they’d be impressed.
They don’t know about me as Becky so I would have to ‘come out’ to them.

Needless to say I’ll be talent spotting over the coming months…and as always I’ll listen to any suggestions. But in the end it comes down to a decision including many factors of which “do I like the music” is only one.
I just hope that next year the selected band actually makes it to the event! -

Guest07/06/2011 at 9:28 pmI like Big Audio Dynamite. As long as nobody harangues me to dance, it could induce me to considering attending

Please don’t get the wrong idea about my comments, I’m in no way complaining about any aspect of TF this year I am 100% happy with everything I experienced there. I agree as many others have expressed, Amanda an her helpers did an amazing job and I will be purchasing the first tickets for next year as soon as they are available.
My theory about the band tho with the benefit of 15 years in the entertainment industry, is that their material was limited to rockabilly style music and band with a much wider variety of material in my opinion would of had more people on the dance floor.
You cant have live entertainment ‘in the background’, it just doesn’t work. You either have live entertainment and give them their chance to deliver their entertainment or you have background music in which case u get a DJ.

Contacted the band, He apologises for the bad facebook link but has also told me they are performing all Saturdays in July at Bankstown Sports in the Rain Forest Lounge.
