  • Getting the courage to go wig shopping

    Hi Nicole,

The very first time I went wig hunting it took me hours to work up the courage to enter the store. Each time I walked up to shop entrance I would lose courage and find some excuse not to enter. I actually gave up and drove away but luckily my self disgust at my cowardice overcome my fear and I turned around and then walked straight in. I am so glad I did as the ladies were wonderful and had seen it all before many times.

In the end I walked out with a lovely wig and a huge smile on my face.

    Hi Nicole,

I know I was very shy and extremely nervous before I finally came out. What helped me with buying my first wig that suited me (sfter a couple of mail-order disappointments) was telephoning first, and explaining what I wanted a wig for. The lady on the phone was very understanding, and so I made an appointment and subsequently bought a wig after trying out diferent styles and colours.

I agree with the other ladies. I’ve found that shop assistants have mostly seen it all before and are not shocked or fussed. and mostly very helpful (after all your not breaking any laws).
This also goes for buying make up and clothing. I have found that a lot of shop assistants find it a bit of fun to help you. Some are very curious and interested.
I recently was shopping for my dress for Transformal and the little cuttie who helped me try on four dresses, and went through the racks pulling dresses out for my opinion.
She was super helpful and she was enjoying helping me.
She even made me promise to bring in a picture from Transformal. This type of help is quite common,(thankfully). Shop is Ritzy Rose in Newcastle

    Hi Nicole,

going into a specialist store would be like jumping straight into the deep end. Have you got comfortable just walking around department stores in the woman’s section. Or buying articles from stores like Big W that have a self serve checkout. I buy many of my shoes, sandles and boots from Big W as they are inexpensive, though I am lucky I am a woman’s size 10 in shoes and they do stock up to size 11 I think.

But each time you go into these areas, and each time you buy from a store, will give you more confidence, remember many men do buy things, including lingerie, for their wives and partners if you feel you have to validate yourself to anyone. But otherwise people in these places do mind their own business.

hope this helps, and good luck Nicole,
    hugs Cali

Dear All, a common thread with which all of us are familiar.Once we take that one step and overcome our initial fear. It is amazing how helpful and unjudgemental shop staff can be.If a member of staff asks me if the item is a gift,I reply “Yes a gift to myself!” Love the look on their faces.Never underestimate the tactic of shock and surprise.Had some real fun with that one.XNadesha

    Hi Nicole,

Hopefully you have a wig now. I have been to several shops for wigs in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne and have always received good service. I have been made every time and the staff couldn’t do enough to help – this is from all of the companies that I have been to. My guess is that we make up a fair percentage of the market.

My first time was in boy mode and terrified was an understatement of how
I felt. Like you I have never bought anything for myself before this and it was my first step into the big wide world. I remember looking inside the wig store in Malbourne and saw a guy trying on a wig, he didn’t care neither did the attendant. Even then it took me two days and just before I flew back to Brisbane before I managed to get the courage to go in. The sales lady was very supportative and asked if I was from seahourse Victoria – So I know I wasn’t the first. She saw how nervous I was and put me in the chair that was furtherest from anyone and I couldn’t see outside – probably for my own benefit more than anything else. All I can say is that when I started trying on the wigs I was in heaven and just enjoyed the moment. Oh and she was a good sales lady – I bought the wig, some wig care products, costume jewlery – spent a little more than I originially planned but never regretted it.
