Bullying and Violence Make Asian Schools Unsafe for LGBT

Staff Reporter – Khaosod English 2015-11-23BANGKOK — When Angsanil Kaewmusi, attended school back home in Uthai Thani province, she couldn’t enter a restroom without being hounded.
A woman at heart, the 19-year-old doesn’t like to stand up when she goes to the bathroom. It was after she would enter a stall in the restroom and close the door that boys would start splashing water into the toilet.

This is indeed a distressing issue. Sometimes I feel that this subject is hidden in the heat of the controversy over marriage equality – that is undoubtedly important, partly for its symbolic as well as practical benefits, but the daily struggles of LGBTiQA youngsters are real all over the globe. It is encouraging that there are some steps being taken in Western countries to address these things – including by some churches in relation to their own schools – but there is a long way to go. Hopefully such steps forward – and other initiatives such as the Wear It Purple campaign – will have their influence internationally too…
