I share the concerns of the author. I think this TV series is anything but progressive. The whole ‘trans kid’ phenomenon seems deeply dodgy to me.

Thanks Sara but I think you should have put a spoiler alert on your attachment. Even after watching only the first episode I had similar concerns that complex issues were being over simplified.
For those who haven’t yet watched episode 1 it’s on again tonight at 9pm on Viceland.

Now that I have watched the first episode I would nt have any concerns in recommending it to parents who have just discovered their child showing signs of being Trans. because It has some value in revealing some of the issues that may arise.
Of course I would also suggest that they don’t take it as a defining example of Trans children but at least it will have some benefit in helping them think through their own situations and hopefully seek some clinical advice/ support.

Three episodes viewed now and all I can say is how well the producers have recognized and displayed all the problems that will arise in a modern family where a young one identifies as Transgender.

I hope this program helps families understand what can unfold if a son or daughter for that matter identifies as trans.

Having bing watched all three episodes of Butterfly I think it represented the problems and difficulties families can face if their child exhibits trans behaviour. It was no doubt over dramaticized in terms of the characters to emphasise the evolving situation, however I don’t think this is bad thing in terms of telling the depth of feeling a child can go through. Certainly it’s brilliant that such a series can be made and be available in prime time. Compare that to the absolute paucity of information available children of the 50’s (my generation) who knew nothing and “manned” up till the lot metaphorically comes tumbling out a mental knicker failure later in life.

I watched all three with wife and we both thought it was done quite well and covering the problems like parent conflicts.

What I would have liked to see was more to educate the public how hardwired it can be. There is a good chance being transgended may even show up on a MRI but this would require quite a bit of thought how to stimulate the right part of the brain so it would show up.

Anyone who seriously thought that Butterfly was a show with a happy ending should probably read this. There has been no testing done on the long-term effects of puberty blockers. Putting gender non-conforming kids on them because they like the ‘wrong’ toys is a medical scandal that is going to be huge when it breaks. The whole Butterfly show was basically just propaganda for the ghastly Mermaids organisation, who should be the subject of a Royal Commission in the UK for the damage they’ve done to a whole generation of vulnerable children. Happening here in Australia too, and being cheered on by people who think they’re being progressive.

There wouldnt be a need for long term effect studies on puberty blockers becsuse they are only intended for short term use and are administered in that way.

As always ,medication use is assessed by determining what is likely to be a more favourable outcome by use of medication rather than no use at all.

The author rejecting puberty blockers is adopting a very strange attitude. She implies it’s far better for trans child who has been convinced all their life they are really a girl to grow a beard and for the voice to break and thus make later transition infinitely more difficult.
Puberty blockers have widely used and no long damage demonstrated.

I’m firmly in the skeptic’s camp when it comes to new ‘miracle’ medical treatments- particularly if they have apparently no side effects.
Can those who believe there is no potential damage associated with puberty blockers point me to the medical research that underpins their view. I thought this was a relatively recent medical intervention so how do we determine long term outcomes?

Well said Adrian, we have all been around long enough to know any pharmaceutical you take can have side effect and depending on the individual they can vary. I have a friend who has been on HRT and blockers for some years and she believes that the blockers have caused shrinkage and no functionality to her. While this did not seem to be of concern in her haste to transition to a TG she is now questioning where she wants to go in the future. This may not seem to be an issue in pubescent boys transitioning MTF waiting to begin their HRT, it could easily be an issue for an adult transitioning MTF if they are still maintaining a full relationship with a partner. As I said to my friend talk to your doctor and see what they say and base your decision on reliable information. I don’t know if this is a one off personal issue for my friend or a more common side effect for TG’s who are adults already.
