Forum Posting – Staying on Topic and related housekeeping
In the Chat Room on Feb 24th Jane_5 asserted:
“I started a little thing of my own on TR but Amanda pulled it out because it was to serious”
Lets just ignore the fact that I didn’t pull the topic (http://forum.tgr.net.au/cms/forum/FXXXXXXXX/1103-103&highlight=)
but just moved it to what might be a more appropriate place in the forums.
It still leaves a misunderstanding about the forums, which even after emailing Jane at length, is obviously not understood. So, I’m stating my position in public as administrator here – so everyone can understand how I manage the site.
The forums are primarily there to be a resource for the entire community.
My goal is that people can find information and recommendations easily, and by sharing what we know or think, help each other. My understanding of what is helpful is, I hope, very broad and certainly includes the use of the forums to discuss social events, ponder the meaning of being Transgendered, or seek the support of others. But to leave a legacy of postings that can be browsed or searched to find information, the threads have to remain on-topic. This generally rules out the “owning” of a thread by anyone as a private blog or “web site”. The important thing is what is being talked about and where it is classified in the forums – not who made the posting.
At the moment I actively move topics that have not been placed in the most intuitive forum, split topics that have deviated from their original title, and delete postings that have outlived any potential usefulness.
And I also clearly occasionally upset people. I hope that having explained why the editorial action is important to the site people will understand and not attack me.
Editing is a time-consuming manual activity and I only scrape the surface – with 3400 postings and over 1,500 Google indexed pages at the time of posting the forums are never going to be completely organised or tidy.
But if you find something on the site that has rambled off in an unexpected direction, or which has hidden deep in the thread some valuable information – then let me know and I’ll try to tidy it up.I also would encourage people starting a new thread to look at the forum titles and try to choose an appropriate place to grow the web site.
I’ve posted this as an announcement because it really isn’t negotiable – but if you want to flame/discuss this posting go ahead in the general forums but PLEASE get your facts right first.
