An independent MP is set to introduce legislation which aims to ban gay
conversion therapy and allow 16-year-olds to change their gender and sex
without surgery. An MP will look to reform and modernise NSW’s laws to improve rights for LGBTQI+ people, and “make life easier for a trans person”.
The omnibus bill, which will be introduced by independent Sydney MP Alex Greenwich to ban conversion therapy, will allow people over the age of 16 to change their sex without surgery, and establish consent laws for intersex people.
“Should this bill pass, it will just make life easier for a trans person,” Mr Greenwich said.
“Importantly, it modernises our laws to make sure that protections that were drafted in the ’70, ’80s and ’90s are reflective of a modern day.
“It also seeks to update the language and terminology in our state’s rules, which is quite outdated, to make it more inclusive, to ensure that people cannot be discriminated against with their sexuality or gender identity.”
