  • Advice on dressing for your shape

more form the internet – madison magazine, this time. as usual, it is a bit simplistic (what happens if you are athletic and curvy – and who hasn’t killer shoulders?). as for the pregnant tips … don’t despair, i have tried this look and had some pleasant responses!!! happy experimenting … :)

No matter what your silhouette, this season’s styles can be adapted for maximum impact.

    Pregnant
    • Empire lines can make you look pregnant if you’re not pregnant, but when you are, their flowing lines across the belly and emphasis on the bust are perfect.
    • If you can’t bear to go without some lift through the legs, stick to wedges, which provide much more support than high heels.
    • Underwear is key. Because your breasts grow during pregnancy, update your lingerie regularly.
    • Stretchy jersey should be snug, not tight.
    • Indulge in big jewellery while you can – baby’s fingers and dangling earrings do not mix.

    Tall
    • Tall girls can get away with trendier dressing – try metallics (yes, even on your lower half), short skirts with flats and man-style pieces.
    • Don’t be afraid of heels – they make everyone’s legs look better. Who cares if you’re tall – wear that height with pride.
    • Don’t skirt around short skirts. A high hemline can look cheap on your curvier sisters, but makes long legs look willowy.
    • Wearing flowing, deconstructed shapes on top helps balance long legs.
    • Contrast colours on the top and bottom to break up your shape and add curves.

    Petite
    • Lengthen those legs! High hemlines give the illusion of height.
    • Choose a simple dress with a nipped-in waist to emphasise your pocket-sized curves.
    • Those tiny Olsen twins can get away with oversized frames, but they’re famous. For the rest of us, smaller sunglasses won’t swamp delicate features.
    • Keep trousers and jeans fitted to avoid masses of fabric overwhelming your frame.
    • Shop for shoes online – there are always end-of-the-line designer styles in smaller sizes available on net-a-porter.com or ebay.com.

    Curvy
    • Sometimes wearing clothes meant to “disguise” your curves can be a red flag that you’re doing just that. As long as you stick to beautiful tailoring and colours that suit your complexion, don’t be afraid to try out trends.
    • Curves often hug a tiny waist – show it off with high waists and cinched belts.
    • Shoes with ankle straps can be tricky, but they work if you make sure the straps fall below the ankle itself.
    • A full skirt slims legs.
    • Tiny handbags can look too flouncy on a curvier girl. Stick to bigger styles.

    Athletic
    • Anything too fluffy and feminine is off the mark on a well-toned body – sportier styles look sexy and confident.
    • Got abs? Show them off with a cut-out swimsuit and revel in being the envy of the rest of us.
    • A small splash of sparkle can elevate streamlined into party time without sacrificing chic.
    • Wide-leg trousers work well for muscly thighs – but balance them with a fitted top (and show off those killer shoulders).
    • Simple statement jewellery says girl without being girlie.
