Sex identity ‘must change’
TRANSGENDER people should be able to identify their sex on all legal documents, the Australian Human Rights Commission says.
The government should remove barriers for changing sex identity on documents such as birth certificates, a new report by the commission says.
Transgender people should be allowed to self-identify their sex without having to undergo gender-change surgery, it says.
And sex or gender should be removed from government forms and documents, where possible.
Transgender people should also be able to undergo sex-change surgery regardless of their marital status.
Human Rights Commissioner Graeme Innes said the report had identified many problems associated with the legal recognition of sex identity.
“I hope this paper leads to action by the Australian government to create a fairer and less complicated identification system that recognises sex and gender diversity,” he said.
