Women who wear pants are breaking the law

Paris law bans trousers for women10:30 AEST Wed Nov 18 Nov 18,

It may be the fashion capital of the world but a law introduced more than 200 years ago makes it illegal for women to wear trousers in Paris.

The decree was introduced in 1800 by Paris’ police chief — and it has withstood attempts over the years to repeal it.

Back then, a Parisian woman wishing to wear long pants had to go to a police station to receive permission.

According to the UK Telegraph newspaper, the decree was amended in 1892 to allow women to wear trousers “as long as the woman is holding the reins of a horse”. In 1909, this was extended to bicycles.

As recently as 2003 the French minister for gender equality declined to remove the law, saying: “Disuse is sometimes more efficient than (state) intervention in adapting the law to changing mores.”

The law has not been enforced for decades and it is highly unlikely that will change any time soon, given that long pants are part of the standard uniform for policewomen in Paris.
