TgR Wall Forums Gender Diversity in Australia Surveys 2017 Survey – Design

As I previously posted in the “2015” survey thread I’ve resurrected the idea of doing another survey of TgR members (and any others I can validate as being transgender).

Because of the confusion surrounding the proposal in 2015 to run a survey I have decided that the 2017 survey (if it sees the light of day) will in part be a longitudinal survey comparing with the data we got in 2011 .

Keeping a link back to the 2011 survey means that the analysis will be based in a lot of places on the respondents’ “true gender identity”. In the 2011 survey everyone was given a choice of 5 gender identities to choose from in a linear progression from masculine to feminine.

Trying to constrain our idea of gender to a linear dimension was always going to be a compromise, but it was more meaningful than collecting data against poorly defined gender names like “crossdresser” or “transsexual” or even worse “transgender”.

Going forward in the 2017 survey we have to use a similar 5 point classification of gender. But I’ve looked at the comments I collected in 2015 and tried to reword the question so it is easier to decide “which box” to tick.

As the gender classification is so central to the survey I want to run it past everyone. If you would find the question difficult to answer in its modified form then I’d be very interested to hear from you.

In the proposed survey there would be two parts… the actual question… and the explanatory help.
Here is the proposed question (apologies for the small font!)…

    And here is the help

IMHO shouldn’t have any problem getting a reliable answer

Thank you Adrian. I’ve looked at the design several times and tried to look at the definitions from my narrow perspective and across the broader community. I got myself in a bit of a tangle for awhile ordering how I’d answer the question as to how I am or how I see myself. After stopping and thinking about though you have this covered well. So congratulations on a well thought set of practical definitions.
