I wrote this piece for our local Violet Town notice board on Facebook. Today I was stopped in the street In Benalla by total strangers and greeted warmly, So Emma I would meet Heather Ewart before I canned her, I was so impressed by her warmth and down to earth friendliness.

I am sure she is as you say she is person-to-person Diane. For me, watching her on the telly, she grates. Some adore Jim Carrey, others can’t stand him and think his best movie was The Dead Pool because he was killed in the first 5 minutes. Some think that Nicole Kidman is Australia’s greatest actor. Others think she is a screeching wooden hyena whose best work was in BMX Bandits.

I at no stage criticised the subject matter, the location, or the point of the show. We can still have an opinion or another point of view can we not?

All the best to those in Violet Town xx

Sorry Adrian that is probably/definitely my fault again.

Hi Marian, your post on Back Roads prompted to watch on i-view, the episode on Violet Town, as well as others. Whilst Di Reeves certainly enjoys a better life than could have been possible years ago. It also reminds me that there is a far better acceptance of T-girls in the community today than in past and the days gone by. The prejudices that where once always associated with being a T-girl are for the most part gone is what I have found. Good on you Di and have a great life in your little slice of heaven. When I retire I will be retiring in Melbourne so the Sunday markets in Violet Town will make for a great place to visit from time to time. Rosemary

Thanks for your post Rosemary. I guess that the general level of acceptance has improved as a consequence of a more broad minded media who will include the trans community in productions such as Back Roads. It all helps to ‘normalise’ both our participation and capacity to actively contribute to society: and that’s a good thing. Of course none of this would be possible without the courage of brave souls like Di and their partners who are prepared to quietly and unabashedly challenge some of the lingering orthodoxy in regard to perceptions of gender, relationships and how we should dress.
    Regards Marian

I watched this episode of Backroads a few nights ago following a suggestion by one of my new Lady golfing friends . She told her husband ” I know someone like that who is now a member of our club “and we are enjoying playing golf together. He now wants a game at some stage.!
I really enjoyed the program and the presenter was fine IMO. most importantly it showed a diverse community welcoming to all and obviously enjoying themselves.

‘I think i’d like to go to Violet Town one day and meet you Dianne .
