ACT: Where can I get clothing etc in Canberra
Posted by Anonymous on 27/01/2010 at 2:04 amHi I am a new member and I live in Canberra and am currently sitting here in my new black “skinny” jeans (ex DFO) my new pink tee also ex DFO, 4″ Mary Janes and minimal male up. My problem is where can one get clothes, shoes, wigs, bras etc in Canberra, is there a specialty cross dresser shop?
Any advice will be gladly receivedModerator

Guest28/01/2010 at 8:50 amTo Quote Amanda >>> ! Off topic post – yawn!
Anyone got information about shops in CANBERRA or shall I just delete this thread? <<<
Buying clothes is easy – jut go into any store that sells women’s clothes and you’ll find everything you need! Unless of course you’re into alternative clothing like Gothy stuff.
Just about all shoe stores in Canberra stock womens footwear! I guess the size of you feet limits which stores will have appropriate sizings tho.
Underwear? Well unless you’re ok walking into Bra’s-n-Things, I suggest the major stores like Target, Myers, etc… Plenty of choice and not such an “intimate” specialist store!
Same goes for makeup – try Big W or stores like Priceline. They’ll have everything you need.
Wigs – well, there are quite a few online stores to select from. I don’t think there are any specialist wig stores in Canberra? Maybe a few hairdressers have a small range?
As far as I know, there is no specialist store catering to the Trans community in Canberra.
Still yawning Amanda? It was on topic wasn’t it? Or do I get the exclamation mark too? You wouldn’t delete me would you Amanda?

Guest28/01/2010 at 6:10 pmThanks Girls,
I looked at salvos etc talk about a crowd, so far my best success has been at DFO , if you know your size just walk in and buy, I guess this will apply to most others like target etc.

Guest29/01/2010 at 3:24 amThere is no place especially for Tran folks here in Canberra, too neche for anybody to survive, but the best hign to do is just walk str8 in and buy what you want, and don’t be afraid to ask for help and if they turn a nose up at you, just walk out.
But the name of the game is to know your sizes and with those in mind, go shopping. If anonymity is a needed thing, buy with cash not the credit card so things can’t be traced back to you.
First go to Vinnies etc and try stuff on, and make note of the brands and sizes and then go buy new if you want. Better to be cluely than not cluey.
Bras, my bugbear ATM, can’t find 16As or 16Bs as 18 and larger have cups way too big for my bust size, very frustrating and more so when on a very tight budget. I won’t buy second hand bras as they are, well shagged out and you need a good bra in new condition.
Am unsure if buying bras via the Net is good or not, any thoughts on this? -

trade secret out at the airport has a good range of bras and undies. they also have a rack (no pun intended) of bras and underwear specials/reduced prices. it’s a bit of a hunt, but i have found some really good quality items there, including a nice silk bra and panty set by pleasure state.
happy shopping!

Guest06/02/2010 at 2:42 amHi all,
If looking for wigs, I hear that the wig shop/hairdresser @ Canberra Hospital is quite TG friendly. She has some nice wigs in the window – but not cheap.
Virginia : Pleasure State is gorgeous – was no doubt a nice, cheaper buy at the airport.
Clare’s comments re places to shop are spot on. Also, Abby’s comments about using cash is a very, very good idea !!!!! 😉
Good luck Gwendolyne, and welcome !!!!

Guest19/02/2011 at 1:37 pmSt Vinnies is the best resource in Canberra I’ve found, but I’m not aware of any stores that specialize for the transgender community…

Guest19/02/2011 at 11:52 pmIn Queanbeyan, there are 4 to choose from; The Salvation Army, The Salvos (yes, 2 different shops!), Anglicare and Vinnies.
Vinnies and Salvation Army are small stores. Vinnies is usually the most expensive, but you can get some really nice stuff at all of them. They all have a pretty regular turnover, so you can usually find different items every week.
There is also a large Salvos at Fyshwick.
I regularly shop at all 4 Queanbeyan stores, as well as Fyshwick. I’ve also shopped at Salvos on Phillip. I never even get a raised eyebrow from staff, and most other shoppers just ignore me. (No, I don’t pass).

Hi to all
I just got 2 pairs of Diana Ferrari shoes on the weekend at DFO fyshwick , they were very nice and helpful there and i was in male mode , i found the Joanne Mercer store there as well and i couldnt get a shoe to fit , in DF i take a 10 & 1/2 and there was quite a large range to choose from , also got a nice pair of sandles at target as well .
I found the DFO there quite good and a store called Brands , has a drag queen working there and he was very helpful with bra’s and knickers etc , recomend the place highly .

Guest14/05/2016 at 1:31 pmI recently went to Forcast in Belconnen, in drab, and the service was excellent. Also recently had a good experience at Forcast DFO. I love the style of this label, they often have great sales, so it was great to have in store feedback and advice. I look forward to showing off some new items at Transformal 2016!

Any store catering for women’s wear, and or underwear. I’ve never had a problem
in any store. Don’t be shy, tell the sales staff you’re shopping for yourself, I think you’ll be surprised at the reception you will receive. You’re money is as good as any and store are in the business of sales, and sales mean money and income. -
Not sure if i would be suffiently game going into one of the local stores to do so. Have been into lingerie shop, on a quiet arvo, but i didn’t say much.
About all i could suggest is a phone call first – enquiring if they are trans* friendly. Then try to organise a time & find the staff member you spoke to.
If nothing else, you may feel a little more comfortable to begin with. -
I guess it depends on your size .. For me there are many great on-line stores available. Believe it or not you can get just about anything from the US or UK and sent to you within a week these days. Shoes are always an issue for me but I found a great online store called Shoebuy. Make up and general clothing you can just about get anywhere.

I wholeheartedly agree with Bridgette about online purchasing. The speed of delivery from online retailers that I use such as Ezibuy, Bendon, DeBras et al and their very efficient returns system means you don’t have to go store shopping if you are uncomfortable with that. As many members will attest the online catalogues are now very comprehensive and there is something for everyone. I used to buy footwear from Longline shoes and assume you can still source from there. Expensive but a good fit given their easy measurement template system.
I also agree that buying from the US and or UK is equally effective.
All that said the thrill of buying from a conventional Women’s Apparel store still has a lot of appeal to me but I need to be in an adventurous or courageous mindset to do this. Have done so at times but never brave enough to use the fitting rooms. I certainly admire and indeed envy the girls on this great website who do so.

Guest21/05/2016 at 10:52 amHi all,
I’m with the on line buyers, but with the possible exception of buying on line and then picking up “in store”.
I agree that all retailers welcome anyone’s cash, especially with the competition that’s coming from on line.
I wont re post them all here, but I have had great service from on line shops selling shoes, sleepwear, lingerie, outerwear, even ball and period gowns from overseas!! Knowing your sizes is important of course, but if you cant solve that problem, there are dressmakers/alteration places that will happily do your measurements for you, so you can order knowing all will be well!
Last but not least, a discreet enquiry to any of the personal shopper services of the DJ’s and Myers of this world will see you made very welcome.
Regards
Caty
