  • Being a political candidate – from a transgender perspective (no political comment)

As some of you are aware, I was a candidate for a minor party in yesterday’s election. Here are my observations as a transgender woman.

I spoke at 11 public meetings, many in pubs, and no one was abusive: indeed I was treated respectfully by all and warmly by many. The same happened out and about meeting and talking with people. The electorate I’m in is very conservative, but with pockets of progressive thinkers.

I had a reasonable amount of media exposure, all of which was positive or benign.

On Facebook, there was the occasional transphobic comment at the start of the campaign but thereafter nothing (directly to me). Most of the trolling was in relation to my political views, and even that wasn’t too extreme.

    Regards,

    Michaela

That is great news Chantelle. As far as I am aware there were 2 other transgender candidates in this election. The candidate in Queensland reported some bad trolling on Facebook shortly after announcing her candidacy.
