Blood donors
Posted by Anonymous on 11/03/2010 at 1:37 amIs anyone else out there a blood donor? Has anyone had to cease being a donor after going on HRT? Is it an issue? Has anyone been hassled for it?
And anything else anyone can think of…
Thanks, Flick

Guest11/03/2010 at 11:49 amHi Felicity.
I have been a blood donor since 1982 and never had a problem with the screening requirements as a male not on HRT.
However, your question raises a valid query! Natural women give blood donations with all their normal female hormone levels and their monthly variations if you know what I mean!
Is a transsexual receiving female hormones going to have a similar or different effect on the blood plasma to a natural woman after giving a blood donation?
Would giving a blood donations reduce the effectivness of the female hormones to the transsexuaal?
I guess that is a question only an Endocrinologist can answer!

Guest11/03/2010 at 1:38 pmI went to the Red Cross to donate in February 2010, well the trailer was in the Bunnings carpark. Once I sorted my ID. issue (I haven’t put in a Deed Poll yet) there was no issue with me donating blood and being on HRT. The only hassle that I had was an anaemia issue with a low iron count but normal Ferritin. My endo. suggested that I would be more towards a female standard now which would have let me donate but to finish sorting this matter I have to talk with my GP. first and get a clearance form signed to take back to the Red Cross. If my GP. wants to do more tests then she will if necessary and I think my endo. wants to check those levels too with my next set of bloods.
I’ll keep you posted but I don’t when yet.

Guest11/03/2010 at 10:29 pmI was a blood donor for over 30 years, until I commenced taking regular prescribed aspirin 4 years ago. It is important you advise all medications you take. HRT should not prevent anyone form giving blood.
The only issue I had was I realised one day that somebody had entered the TG word on the computer database. A telephone call to the centre manager addressed that.
When I lived in New Zealand (for almost 5 years) “transsexual” was included in legislation excluding blood donation. Fine. Offensive, but that’s the law.
We need blood donors. Keep it up

Guest07/09/2010 at 11:06 amI used to give blood, well as a quirk i would give blood a week before a major sporting event, it was probably in my head but i thought “out with the old and make the new”
Now in time if some male received my A+ blood they would go home redecorate, get there hair and nails done and cry over the movie titanic.
argh what a mess.Maddy
