  • Changing gender on car licence

    Hi all,

Since changing my name last year, I have been trying to find out what was required to change my gender on my licence, although the gender does not show up on the actual licence, but it is still on record with MVR. When I first asked, the staff of the Alice Springs Motor Vehicle Registry, weren’t to sure, so I emailed Darwin, I did get a reply, but I lost it, and I couldn’t remember what it said, so I decided today ( 18/01/08 ), that seeing as how I had to renew my licence I would go and see if they could help me this time, and was told what was required. See quoted clause

    2.02.9 Evidence of Gender Reassignment

Full EO! (Category A and B) original documents in the current or former name, and a new birth certificate (with change of name if applicable) issued by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages is required from a person who has had a gender reassignment. “

So to me this says that I need, some form of ID plus my new birth certificate with my new gender, which I cannot obtain until after I have had the operation.

Well this is what is required by the Northern Territory, It would be interesting to see what they other states require.

    Hugs

I think you will find that all States and Territories in Australia have the same requirement as the Northern Territory – except The state of Queensland… In Queensland one requires a Change of name certificate for the name change to be put on a Drivers Licence, and in addition if one receives a letter from ones Psychiatrist stating one is on the Gender reassignment Program etc. QLD Transport will allow an ‘F’ to be placed on the licence, irrespective of what the gender is on the change of name certificate.

FYI New Zealand has the same policy as Queensland I understand.

I hope this information was useful.

VicRoads actually has all the details posted on its website http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au – just follow the licence renewal link. From memory it is fairly similar to the NT requirements which is not surprising. There is an organisation called COAG (Council of Australian Governments) where the states/territories get their heads together to try to get a bit of uniformity into legislation.
