Cosplay – Crossplay
Posted by Anonymous on 08/07/2009 at 9:23 amI remember when I was young, I always enjoyed dressing up when no one was at home. I never knew why I found myself wanting to do that all the time I knew it was something you could not talk about with others people or friends.
But now when searching on the net for some hip pads I came across a Web site called cosplay it’s a term I’ve heard of before its big in Japan, people dressed as their favourite cartoon or movie character
But the thing that got me is the number of boys who now crossplay that is dressed as women or female characters. This is something I wish I could have done as a child to be able to go out with friends and dress up.
Maybe our society is changing and allowing people to be who they wanted to be without being judgedPenny

Guest09/07/2009 at 12:32 amHi Penny,
isn’t it strange that we recognised, even as children, that dressing up in mums, or sisters, clothing wouldn’t be acceptable for some reason? Yet all kids play dress ups. I wonder what ‘paranoia’ gene sparks this up?
Re the cos play, I found them as well, there are a few groups in yahoo and in Flickr, I reckon they are great and, like you, hope it is a new dawning in acceptance, then again, cross dressing in eastern countries seems to have a more ‘respectable’ history!
Send us the URL you have??

Guest10/07/2009 at 11:25 amHi girls
I’ve seen Cosplay for a while on the net, its very interesting sub culture. There was recent convention here in Adelaide, there were a couple of female Amine characters I saw (I assumed Mortal Combat or Gundam !!) my TGdar thought they were crossdressing. There were a couple of others were definites, especially the 15 stone guy with a beard dressed like Sailor Moon (oh dear!!)
I must say it looked a lot of fun..Cosplay’s not hard to find just google and heaps of sites come up.
I’m currently watching an item on ebay from Cosplayying, I’m too old to be a Sailor Scout, but a Star Trek TOS uniform is always just a great fantasy costme, especially with the black stockings and the boots.

Guest11/07/2009 at 3:38 amThere was once an episode of CSI where a convention was held where all members dressed as animals etc. I wonder whether this is more a role playing ‘pastime’ whereas as Cross dressing is something that goes far deeper than just role playing and is not a pastime.

I do agree with you Helen, but looking from the outside, it would be nice for the general public to be more understanding and tollerent of crossing dressing and I dont care if they think its a pastime or a something more deeper. From the inside I do agree that cross dressing is something that is just buildin to someone and not just an interest of passing events.

Guest12/07/2009 at 10:58 pmHi Kelly, of course you are quite correct, in fact can you imagine the impact on your life if your mum or dad, whoever, found you dressing up in our sisters clothes and then commence to encourage you? “Well I’ll be damned, son you look so pretty in that dress, here, let’s go into town and get you a whole new wardrobe”.
How’s that for a fantasy? If only! **sigh**

Guest17/07/2009 at 1:54 pmYou all have valid points of view, I think it goes hand in hand as you grow you slip into female form and practice trial and error some will be fortunate to continue and bloom while others are forced into a world they can not hope to understand or fit in.
As to cosplay well lets say I enjoyed my share of being super hero to super villian. 😆

Guest22/07/2009 at 10:11 amI’m fascinated with cosplay, but before I’d ever do it, I’d have to study the characters. I’d have to immerse myself in manga and anime culture for a while, and I haven’t done that yet.

Guest23/07/2010 at 1:59 amI have been into anime since Prince Planet and Marine Boy first came to the TV and have a large collection of anime. I believe cosplay is a great way to express your inner self and enjoy a bit of fantasy, a great stress relief from daily life. It’s a pity more TG’s don’t get together and dress up as their favourite characters as it would make great excuses for getting together and having partys. I believe some people are too afraid to dress as their favourite characters in fear of being embarrassed, which is a pity. I say “go for it” it’s fun to pretend.

Guest23/07/2010 at 5:32 amIndeed it must be fun to do, as long as you have a favourite character. Cosplay is a growing thing, but as far I know, is really only done for conventions. The concept seems to have come from Japan and it would seem that cross dressing etc is quite accepted there – certainly the music industry there has embraced it in the Visual Kei area anyway – so many pretty bands !

Guest13/09/2010 at 1:12 amHi everyone ^^
I myself is a big anime fan (also the president of the anime club in Swinburne Uni). The main idea of cosplaying is to dress up as one character you love. When i go to cosplay meets or conventions i’m not afraid of talking even though my voice is not feminine. Cosplaying to a convention is a very nice experience because:
1) you can be who you want to be (female or male character, i got as female characters and i’m quite popular among the anime community in Melbourne ^^)
2) You don’t have to care about who manly you look like or feminine you look like because cosplayers themselves aren’t perfect, so they won’t judge your appearance
3) it’s really really fun, and you’ll get lots of pictures takenIt’s a good excuse to step out dressed for a first time without attendees judging you. Cosplay is actually roleplaying in costume, so you can act as much as u want or if you feel you cannot do some roleplaying ^^ just try to immitate some of your character’s poses.
And here’s a pic of me during a cosplay meet in Melbourne on last Saturday
Cheers
