What a great item to hear about, I didn’t get to Victoria until 78 or 79 but had postal access with the support groups, ‘Seahorse Victoria’ and the ‘Elaine Barrie Project’, sadly omitted from the article. I travelled to Melbourne often enough to get to know Elaine and we often had a long chat way into the wee small hours.
Also omitted, possibly not widely known, was the work by Elaine Barrie in getting the police to stop harassing *cross dressed males in public. It was a common action by the police, if spotting a male in female clothing to use the excuse to arrest for being a ‘public nuisance’. Elaine approached a person high up in the police and made the representation to ask for common decency and sense as these people were not actually committing a crime and the harassment was uncalled for. As it turned out, according to Elaine, a person high in the force was also a cross dresser, this helped.
I also attended dear Trish’s’ establishment. She was a such a great lady who made us all feel welcome and special.
*For younger readers who are politically correct terminology feral. ‘Cross dressed’ was the term used, in a generic description at the time, to describe what we did. We didn’t have ‘gender fluid’, ‘bi-gender’or any of the current phrases. So please don’t bother writing and pointing this out to me, I was there at the time.
