Anyone got a good tip for masking that pesky 5 oclock shadow.

I currently use a concealer plus foundation after a really good shave, but I still fell that the makeup is rather heavy. I’d be interested to hear how other deal with this.

I’ve heard that orange lipstick can be used under foundation.. sounds a bit iffy though.

Word is that Dermablend make a special concealer that’s good for covering the shadow. It might still be heavy, since more cover generally equals more weight?

    Girls,
Yes i asked this question many many (20+) years ago,, and was told to try some red lipstick under your foundation !!!
I was very spectical when i tried it but it works.

I would have normal chose shave then about 8 light strokes of full red stick, use your fingers to blend it over your beard area + a little bid more.

Wait 5-10 mins then continue with your foundation.

As with all new things with make up sit in front of a mirror for a few hours,,, put it on, take it off, put it on, take it off.

    Judy.

But won’t lippy make you a bit too shiny?? Or maybe I am using crap foundation (Clinique)?

You’d think Clinique was one of the best? They are priced as such :P

Why not pluck out the beard and epilate the regrowth? (too much pain to epilate the virgin growth LOL)

Although maybe you’re like me and prefer to sport the 3 day growth look while in male mode? 😉

    Hi Andi,

Orange is the opposite on the colour spectrum to the dark blue-grey colour that our facial skin seems to take on after shaving. Use a light coat of orange lipstick and it will neutralize the beard colour under normal makeup.

I believe dermablend will do the same, although I have never used it myself.

    Regards,
    Julia

I have tried the lipstick approach and while it is OK when you put it on under foundation, removing it can be quite a chore. I still prefer a concealer first and then 2 layers of foundation. I think getting the right fundation colour is the secret and the best way to do this is to go to DJs or Myer and have a session with one of the makeup girls – can be a bit challenging for some of us TG girls but if you want to get it right go to the experts :P

I’ve tried so many different methods of concealment and to some degree they all work. Red lipstick applied over the remaining shadow after shaving works followed by, of course, a concealer, I use ‘Napolean.’ I don’t think it any better than any other. The whole process of applying make up is slow, slow, very slow.
Have a really close double wet shave, followed by a glass of your favourite wine.
Apply a few streaks of red lippy over the remains of your beard, lightly blend in with fingers, followed by a glass of wine.
Apply concealer, probably two coats and whilst drying sip a glass of your favourite wine.
Apply foundation and drink a glass of wine.
We are now ready to apply makeup, gently and evenly and another glass of wine.
Your favourite powder is next and eye shadow, lippy etc and a glass of wine.
By which time I really don’t think you would care if the beard is covered or not. I’m sure one would look much like the ‘Joker.’
By the way, all this most certainly works for me, especially a quality wine!

    Hi All
Ive tried all manner of whisker removal and after a very painfull epilation one day I thought “why go through all that pain and/bother to conceal it when Im not passable ? ” So the way I see it is if people are going to see me a a man in a dress any way why bother trying to hide stubble ? So I shave as as soon as possible to when going out then put on the rest of my make up such as concealer ..
    Just a thought
    Hugs,
    SUZZ

Hi, I’ve been using a concealer called Kryolin for many years. It is an orange/brown colour and takes out the blue of the beard. I apply this over the blue area and blend back into the normal skin. I then use a foundation, lightly over the entire face for even colour. I finish with loose powder which sets the whole effect in place. The powder takes away the shiny and caked on look too. I get the Kryolin from a specialist pharmacy but I bet it can be bought on-line too. The colour code I use is BN.

    ,Hi,

& to think if i had been a dresser i would have had to go through all this . no thanks,

As to make up dont use it if you can call lippy & eyebrow liner enough.

For two years i tryed a few, different ones a conceler & light face powder over that it worked though to wards the end i gave up. & just used a powder, only,

Well at the time i was aged 52, & a few changes started to happen my body hair was getting closer to white from the black colour after that my meds started to work as well plus an eperlater & that helped more, till now im down to 8% hair over all. & white & softer,

What i would do is go to the bigger shops that do makeup or those who do weddings or photo shoot s they would have a good idear of whats the best to use,

Thanks all for the tips. I’m not so into pain so the plucking of the beard is out. I do love wine however, so Liz’s suggestion is appealing…..have a drink while making up and don’t care too much….I am a man after all!

    Cheers guys.
