  • Gender-diverse Victorians to be given greater freedom to change birth certificates

The Victorian government has introduced legislation to make it easier for trans gender, gender diverse and intersex people to get new birth certificates that accurately record their gender.

…couples will no longer be forced to divorce if one partner wishes to apply to change the sex recorded on his or her birth registration.

The bill introduced to parliament on Thursday [Aug 18,2016] also removed the need for applicants to have undergone sex affirmation surgery before being able to apply for new birth certificates.

The Australian Capital Territory parliament passed similar reforms in 2014.

This is great news. I have been through the process of changing my birth certificate in NSW and it is very time consuming and expensive, still it had to be done, (for me).

However, I am wondering if the Federal Government, or the ultra conservatives in the Government, will challenge the Victorian legislation on the grounds that recognising the gender change of one partner in a marriage will lead to same sex marriages. I’m sure that they will try to convince us that if this happens we will all be doomed and that civilisation as we know it will end. Regardless of the fact that there are couples that are living in relationships such as this but are being denied the ability to affirm their true gender. It will be interesting to see which way this goes.

Well in an age and time where discrimination is supposed to be on the decline, I’m glad to see that two states (ACT Territory) are starting to see the light. Lets hope Tasmania and South Australia will follow soon. I have my fingers crossed for QLD, WA and the NT as they are probably a little more harder to take on the reform.
