here is a tip i picked up off the internet (i hope you find it useful):

The Perfect Way To Apply Eyeshadow

For best results use the correct brushes. An eyeshadow brush with a firm round tip, is ideal for applying base. For contour, use a tapered brush and for underlining the eyes, use a small flat brush. Try to get the best quality brushes, it does makes a difference to the final result.

Using a neutral eyeshadow (light mushroom, taupe, beige), cover the whole eyelid from the lashes to the brow bone. I prefer to use a slightly matte colour as the base, you can always add shimmer later.

Apply the darkest colour (charcoal grey is typical of a smokey eye), to your brush, gently tap to get rid of any excess powder, you can always build up colour, but its best not to apply too much straight away. Blend the colour into the crease of your eyelid, being careful not to go above the crease line, wing the colour up at the outer corners for a more “sex kitten” look. Keep blending until there are no harsh edges.

To complete the eyeshadow, apply a shimmer highlighter just under the brow bone to lift the eyes, you can also apply this to the inner corner of your eyes, to widen them.

With a soft kohl pencil in black/brown, line as close as you can to your top and bottom lashes, in small strokes, then gently blend. I find the pencils with added smudgers are great, if not use a cotton bud.

Curl your lashes and apply two coats of thickening and lengthening mascara on both the top and bottom lashes.

Finally groom your eyebrows, either with a brow fix or a pencil close to your natural brow shade.

Good tip Virginia, before you do that you can apply an eyeshadow primer. ( I do use one each time I do my make up)

It makes the eyeshadow last all day without having to touch it up and the eyeshadow colours also are more vivid.

In my experience if you buy quality single palette eye shadows (hence two or three or even four to make a set) they are so far superior in quality.

Cheap smorgas board palettes are really not going to hold all day, even with a primer, they are just way too cheap in their manufacture. Great for kis, great for use where you don’t care of the effect “fades” over the day, but if you want to start at 8 AM and still have the eyes at 11 PM, then I can’t get my hands off the Prestige range.

A good quality shimmer is a real plus – they tend to stay on and do get a bit everywhere (you will find it shimmering over your cheeks and hands as the day goes on) but is that an issue :)

    Hi Bethany,

I know Mac do have an eyeshadow primer. If you have a MAC store handy or you can buy it on line in Aus from MAC: http://www.maccosmetics.com.au/templates/products/mp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CAT6016

The Primer I use is Urban Decay Primer Potion, It was recommended from a US based make up forum which I frequent on a daily basis and 99% of the girls there rave about it. I bought my first bottle out of the USA off ebay and I’ve just ordered another bottle from a friend off this forum. http://www.urbandecay.com/categories/EyeshadowPrimerPotion.cfm

    Hope this helps :D

Thank You for that. I am always having to re-do my eye makeup so this may well do the trick.
    Once again Thank You
    Beth.

I use “Touch Base” by Clinique. It’s an eyeshadow base. You can probably get it at any Clinique counter, in Myers, Grace Bros. etc. Might be easier to find than MAC. There are several shades. I like Clinique because it is usually low-allergenic. (No I don’t work for them!)

    Cheers,

    Simone.

I started out with MAC but have slowly swung to Clinique, their foundations and concealers are such a high density that I find I use so much less for coverage, and their primer/moisturizer routine works for me really well.
