hrt- have I left it too late?
Posted by Anonymous on 21/05/2015 at 10:57 pmhi all I am now 45 and am just wondering am I too old or is it too late for me to start hrt. I am in a marriage where my wife no longer wants sex so I am thinking why not chase my dream and get a step closer to where ai want to be. Just need to know if I have left it too late.

From what I have read on the subject there is no exact age at which this could be considered “too late” to contemplate.
Far more important however is your general health and thus suitability to commence HRT as there can be many side effects that need to be considered.
ONLY a doctor should be consulted for proper advice on this subject so would suggest you make an appointment with your GP to discuss.
If you dont wish to raise the subject with your own GP (understandable as most are not familiar with the issue of Transgender then seek an appointment with a Psychiatrist who could then refer you to a Doctor who has dealt with people wanting to commence HRT.
Clinicians follow certain guidelines (Google WPATH) when assessing someone for HRT so dont assume its as easy as getting a scrip from the first doctor you see.
Hope that helps

I really, really hope you haven’t left it too late because I started at age 65.
In my case the Gender Centre in Sydney suggested a sympathetic GP who cut me some slack “because at your age we assume you’ve thought seriously about this for some time”. I went through a gentle discussion with a psych and all the doors opened. Give me a PM if you want to talk more. Caroline is right though, doing it with medical supervision is by far the safest way. -
Hi Abby,
You are not too late, (or too old). I am 64 and started HRT five years ago, so age is not the thing. As has already been mentioned DO go and seek medical advice and help, it is a must do. I tried self medicating, it was a very bad idea.
Might I suggest that you need to think about talking to family members first. I found that it was the hardest part of transitioning.
Best wishes,
Jenn
