Such a positive story, even with the negatives in her early trials, do we dare dream that in another generation that Georgie’s story would not be exceptional?

I watched Georgie Stone’s story on ABC iview, Her indoors watched the Australian story at the time of broadcast. Two differing slants on the same story. I was indeed pleased for the protagonist, Georgie, she appeared to have it altogether, knew what she wanted and the direction on which to travel. A loving and supportive family; what more could she want? Obvious from the start, puberty blockers had been prescribed, feminine voice, feminine hair line, in fact altogether a feminine, soon to be an attractive young woman. My wife came away from the story with an entirely different perspective, and I must agree she was probably right. All was focussed on the transgender individual, everything to the detriment of everyone else. What effect had Georgie and her challenges had on her brother? Her brother experienced a deep depressive illness, and I suspect suicidal thoughts and maybe actions; not good. And reading between the lines, his depression was a continuing illness. The parents had separated as a result of what? the impact of the transgender daughter? There was yet another story and a half over and above the story of Georgie Stone. Even mum had reverted to her maiden name. As my wife pointed out it’s always about the individual transgender person, without ever considering the enormous impact and strain put on family, perhaps friends and the ruination of their lives. Yes, there’s definitely a hint of ‘sour grapes’ but I think for once my wife is right. Perhaps we, as individuals have a need to tread carefully.

I just watched Georgie Stone on iView. What an inspirational girl! Thanks for the heads up Terri.

I also found the Transgender episode of “You Can’t Ask That” on ABC iView. “You Can’t Ask That” is a series of short docos where a panel of marginalised people answer tricky anonymous questions from members of the public. Tonight’s episode covers Islam, Transgender will play on free to air sometime in the future but all episodes are available on iView now. There’s no rush the Transgender episode will remain available until mid 2019.
