TgR Wall Forums Exploring Gender Religion and gender My new website – transspirit.org – sharing trans Christian resources

‘Trans Spirit Flourishing’ is a new initiative of mine to share some of the increasing resources and reflections by trans Christians (including myself). I hope it may be of assistance to other trans people and allies – whether in their own spiritual journeys or as means to help transform so much negativity – and to some who may be uncertain but open to moving forward. It is most certainly not intended for any proselytising – but, even if you have no time for Christians (and some days I truly wonder myself!) I hope you might find some of this helpful for others. The postal survey has shown how gender diversity is now a critical battleground and that religion (which can’t simply be wished away) is being misused horribly. There is no need for this – things are slowly changing, even in surprising places. I hope therefore that what I point to in this is another small brick out of the wall and ‘shower of glitter’ from increasingly visible spiritual journeys.

On a personal note, as I haven’t contributed much lately, this is also by way of a big thankyou to TgR members who have helped me on my own journey. In my life and work, as an ‘out’ priest , I now walk an ‘interesting’ and (in Australia) largely unmarked public pathway but it is full of wonderful fresh joys as well as challenges – so: grateful thanks for those who have helped me simply get out of the door and shadows!

    Hi Josephine
Having liberated myself from the mental and physical abuse of the Catholic Christian Brothers and Lay teachers of the late 1950’s and through the 1960’s in Ireland I have a natural aversion to matters of Christian Faith whilst acknowledging the great work that is done under its auspices and agencies. That said, it is refreshing and indeed comforting to hear from someone like yourself, of a later generation and from a more pragmatic and progressive faith. That you have embraced your calling in a manner that gives expression and endorsement to your own disposition, and by implication, of others in the Trans community is truly inspirational. Having gone through your website in the small hours, the evidence of your unique approach and effort is apparent. I can well imagine the journey you have been on, the challenges you would have faced, and your clear persistence with defining yourself and others like you within a Christian context. Thanks for the share and the great website. Regards Marian

    Hi Josephine,

I think you’ve set yourself up as a beacon for those in your congregation who may feel they need some guidance so well done on putting yourself in that position.

I am sure that any “trans inclined” ( for want of a better term) people that come to you for some help will be given good counsel.

Whilst I am not religious at all, I celebrate DIVERSITY in human behaviour and beliefs as a very important part of being a Human Being compared to the pack mentality that generally exists amongst our community with hostility towards minorities,

I am convinced that the best way forward for acceptance of Trans people in society is for them to assert themselves and be involved in interaction with the general community.

Its a difficult step forward to do that if you are closeted ( I know that from my own experience in the distant past) but the rewards are there if people who identify as Gender Diverse build up the courage to confront society ( in the nicest possible way of course !) with evidence of their gender diversity ie being out in public.

Ive taken up a long held ambition to be a female member of a golf club ( a rather conservative group usually) but am looking forward to the experience over the next few months. Just my little exercise in presenting a TG person to a wider group of people.

All the best with your endeavours

    Caroline
