  • nail problems – prone to breaking

Posted by Anonymous on 22/08/2008 at 6:09 am

    hi everyone
I am trying to grow my nails but when they just get past the tips of a finger they start to crack with any bump or scrape. I’ve tried different products to help keep my nails together from hard coat nail polish to Blackmore’s nail hair and skin tablets. but still my nails still soft and prone to breaking what can I do. I know I can get mail extensions but for my day-to-day work this may be a little more attention that I’d want. I just want to get my own nails growing a little longer than what they are can anyone suggest anything I can do.

Hi Penny, I have the same sort of problem living in the dry air of western NSW. The answer for me has been Nivea Creme. It comes on a 100ml or 200grm screw top blue jar and sells for around $10 to $12 for the bigger jar. Cheaper at K-mart. I rub it into my nails every morning and night or when I just remember. Also makes a great moisturizer as it has lanolin in it. Really good for the cuticles too. I have been using for years and easily grow long nails now. They also have another product in the same sort of jar but it is white and called Nivea light, another fantastic hand and face moisturizer. Hope this helps.

hi Susan, thank you for your information I will go out and buy Nivea creme.
I have been using (Vaseline) intensive-care for hands and nail so I hope that
Nivea will make a change and helped my nails grow.

Hi, I too have problems growing my nils. I tried various hardeners and strengtheners to no avail. The girl who waxes me recommended that I don’t use any nail polish or hardener, that these in fact just make nails brittle and more prone to breaking. After a few months of ignoring her I reverted to simply using a nail and hand cream-at the moemnt vaseline intensive care because it also makes my hands quite young looking. The best advice she gave me is to use one of these creams or even cuticle oil, and most importantly to massage the fingertips until they start to feel warm from the massage. It is the stimulation to the blood supply that encourages growth. Now that I have abandoned nail polish unless going out for the night, I have found my nails much less brittle and looking much healthier. Too much buffing of “ridgey” nails can also be a problem.

    Hi Penny
I also used to have my nails break, have fixed my problem with taking fish oil which is Omega 3 and taking Ginkgo 7500 every day which I have been taking now for a few years now. I have no idea which product is making my nails grow but they are, I also can’t claim that they would work for you but as Omega 3 is good for you and Ginkgo is a good brain food don’t think it would hurt if you give it ago, also please remember with vitamins you must take them for awhile before you see there effect. Hope this may help with your problem.

I also tried to grow my nails but found it was impossable so I took my lead from most woman and tried the acrilic nails. most chemist or targets stores sell the kits for about $20.00 and if you can do it your self. Also you can buy tips that can be reduced to a size that you wish. If one breaks off just replace it. It work for GG so why not for us?

Girls, I don’t know if this idea helps because I don’t know anything about anyone elses habits but this may help.

I am a mechanic who fixes trucks and even though I do break the odd nail, I don’t have a real strength problem. No hardners or lotions except for some after work cream which is mainly for my skin, that’s all. The only thing that I can say is that it comes back to my diet, I went away from faster type foods, even the ones that you prepare at home [pizzas etc.] and started eating good stuff instead. Please hear me, I’m not trying to tell anyone how to live either, your choice is your choice.

For the record, I was really surprised at how my nails actually perform with what I do, they seem to be rather strong these days. The only other thing that I changed in my life over the past year is exercise. I ride to work on my pushbike [at least 15 mins. each way if not more depending on my route] and if it’s raining, I get on the cross trainer for the same amount of time each day [min. 15 mins. twice daily].

These are the only things that I can say are different in my life and my nails perform a lot better as well as my energy levels etc. For the record, I make up a stir fry each week for my lunches and my staples are:
3 x zuchinnies, 3 x capsicums, 1 x onion, 4 x carrots and 6 x mushrooms. 2 x eggs every 2nd day and cereal [bran] with sultanas, milo and a banana for breaky. Also, 2 x oranges and apples every day with an extra banana as well. I also alternate between my fish and red meat etc. as well.

This is what I believe helps me with my nails now, it’s the only answer that I have. Sorry for the long reply but I thought that it may help, Peta.

thank you all for your helpful replies,
Susan the Nivea creme is being applied, alternate between Nivea and Vaseline extra care.
Felicity I’ve tried all the hardeners it didn’t seem to work but will take on the idea of massaging my fingertips, but what type of to cuticle oil did you use?
Shiree I am on the omega 3 supplement but not Ginkgo I will try to find some!
Cybil I have tried the acrylic nails just didn’t work by the time I got one hand done it was almost impossible to do the other, but thank you
Peta_2 thank you most of all your reply is almost a mantra to life you have taken on one of the most eastern philosophies and that it is your body is a temple only good things go in so you can shine. Also thank you for the meal planner that you’ve also put in, you probably didn’t mean to but it looks so simple I will try it.

Hi Penny, I only briefly used Manicare cuticle oil. I have moved on to either Natio hand and nail cream or Vaseline Intensive Care hand and nail cream for younger looking hands (The creams soak in better). Both much of a muchness but the Natio has a nicer, more herbal perfume. I suspect it’s been the technique rather than the product that has “done the trick” for me so it may just be a case of whichever product feels good for you is the way to go.

well after several months of a hand cream and cuticle oil, my nails are still chipping and breaking so now I’ve made the decision to use a clear hardener on my nails and at this stage I don’t really care who notices that I’m using it. It’ll make a little odd that a work, for I am a maintenance technician but if you can help my nails from breaking it’ll be a godsend.

    Penny.
