Your new reputation is on its way!

You may have noticed that the reputation pictures have disappeared from your profile on TgR along with the facility to award people reputation points. The old reputation system was a standard add-on and it really didn’t do what we wanted – in fact in many regards it just encouraged behaviours that don’t add much value to the experience of others.

So, the system has been rebuilt from scratch, and is now collecting data ready to go live in a month or so. The new reputation system will reward three types of behaviour – which I think will make the website more enjoyable and useful for us all.

    They are:
    a) Posting high quality contributions to the forum
    b) Visiting TgR frequently and keeping information there up to date
    c) Talking to other members by email or in the chat room

The website will evaluate everyone’s reputation periodically against the three behaviours. Because your reputation is no longer based on the number of times you log in, or the number of times you post, your reputation can go down as well as up. It should therefore be a much more relevant measure of the contribution currently being made to life in TgR.

So how are the behaviours measured?

Posting – this reputation measures the quality of your forum posts (not the quantity!).
It is assessed directly from the votes of other members on your posts. All moderated postings now display voting buttons allowing members to indicate the quality of the posts. The higher the average rating on your posts – the higher your posting reputation will be.

Visiting – this reputation reflects two measurements.
The first measurement is how many weeks it is since you last logged into TgR – the more frequently you visit the website the higher this reputation will be. The second factor is how long it is since you updated your profile. If your profile is over 6 months old then your reputation will start to fall. To get a reputation of 100% you must have logged-in in the last week, and your profile must be less than 6 months old.

Talking – this reputation can be earned either in the chat room or by replying to emails sent through TgR (or a combination of both).
In the chat room reputation is earned by talking to someone – and is shown in the chat window. Your reputation will be 100% if you have chatted more than the average amount (so at least half the users of the chat room should have a maximum reputation). So as to not penalise new members the chat points will be reset periodically – the details of this are still being thought out to see if we can avoid everyone’s reputation dropping to 0% as a result..
Alternatively the same reputation can be earned by replying to emails that are sent to you through TgR. It is a common complaint that people don’t reply to emails they are sent privately. This reputation addresses that to some degree. To maintain this reputation at 100% you need to reply (through TgR following the link in the received email) whenever you are sent an email through TgR.

There is a lot of detail that needs to be given concerning both the measurement and computation of these reputations. This will be available through help and tool-tips on the web site.

To see how you rate at the moment have a look at your profile (click on Members). Though bear in mind that we are still accumulating data – there is little data at the moment on “Talking” and votes on posts are only just starting to come in in volume. But your Visiting reputation should be 100% !!

And if you are thinking of clever and creative ways of enhancing your reputation – just remember that everything used in the calculation is logged. And any suspicious activity may result in your Invincible reputation being very short lived!

    Amanda,

I agree with Jessica that the new reputation system is an improvement on the old one. Thank you for the effort you have put in developing and implementing this. The more active we are the better will be our reputation.

I have just one small problem with the email reputation. I have replied to all the emails sent to me thru the TgR site. However my reputation for emailing is only 50%. I believe this is because I have on occasion replied directly to the person emailing me rather that replying thru the TgR site. If this is in fact the case then everyone should know their emailing reputation will suffer if that don’t reply using the TgR site.

Yes – there are some fine details to be documented and that is one of them. Obviously if you reply to someone outside TgR then there is no way the reputation system can know you have replied! To encourage replies through the system there is no longer an option on some email forms to show your email address to the recipient. I will also change the text on the email you receive to make it clear that replying by clicking on the link in the email contributes to your reputation. We will have to see if that works in practice. But as many people complain about not getting replies to their emails I thought it was worth trying to track this somehow.

As to 50% – that is quite a good reputation!! Mine is currently 42%!!!
And remember that the email and chat reputations add up – so 50% on email and 50% on chat gives you that elusive 100%!!!!

    Amanda,

TgR is only the second forum (of any type) I have ever engaged in, with Seahorse being my first, as such it’s a bit of a learning curve as to what makes for a good posting. I have noticed that some posts are identified as being ‘recommended’, how is this determined? What should those of us who are lacking posting experience be aiming at?
Also, having read your info about the previous reputation system, I understood that if you indicated that you liked a post that it would ‘cost’ you points, is this still the case?
If I’m jumping the gun with these questions I apologise & will wait for your update on the new system. Everything about this is new to me.

The recommended and featured posts just reflect the average vote so far.
If on average the feedback is that the post is excellent then it is highlighted as “featured”. If the post has attracted feedback that it is good then it is marked as “recommended”. Of course it isn’t quite that simple because people may vote the same post as bad and as excellent! Diversity in action!

I hope people will post just what they want to post. As long as it doesn’t violate the website policy there can be no complaint. If people like your posts then they can indicate this and that will reflect itself in an enhanced reputation. BUT what is considered a good posting within TgR is likely to be as diverse as the membership!

The old reputation system deducted points and allowed you to give points away. None of that is carried over to the new system. Voting on posts does not in an way affect your reputation. (Perhaps it should!!!)

Amanda, if email and chat contribute equally towards a 100 opercent reputation under the new system, then where is the worth in Visiting keeping one’s Profile up to date?

Because email and chat only contribute to the talking reputation. If that is the only one of the three reputations you score on then you will have a maximum reputation of 33%. Each of the three behaviours in my original post contributes to 1/3 of your final reputation (though this may need some find tuning).

I have read this stream with interest and wonder what a high reputation will earn me. Will I get a set of presentation steak knives if I maintain a reputation over a certain level or is it just a number that in the event has no physical meaning, merely one of satisfying my excessively inflated ego.

    Time will tell I expect.

I assumed the reputation would indicate the relevance of our input (& our participation level). Being new to all of this, I was just curious as to how one might present relevant information. The other forum I’m involved with has a different ‘flavour’ to it (& that’s fine) but I would hope to engage in a manner that benefits both me & other readers, hence my question.

I guess we all have to watch to see what type of posts are most appreciated and valued by the membership. It would be presumptuous of me to guess what the outcome will be.

I totally agree, my comment was in regard to the opinion of all members.

I wonder what will happen to the people who just don’t get any email’s will they disappear off the reputation list and be forgotten in the archives of dusty out of date posts, and last years Transformal posters.

I love the new reputation agenda Amanda and congratulate you on devising a system that will encourage a more active involvement by TgR’s members. One comment I do have is I have noticed someone with a reputation greater than 100% in one of their areas. Does this mean we can aspire, as some footballers do regarding their on field efforts, of having a reputation greater than 100%, or is it sadly just a glitch.

Sadly its a glitch… one I was unaware of till one of my reputations went over 100%. I’ll have to think about it tonight – but rest assured I’m still removing the gremlins!

I’ve added a better description (I hope) of the new reputation system in the site help.
