One in every 25 solicitors in Scotland is transsexual
Posted by Anonymous on 29/08/2010 at 2:51 amI found a link to http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/2010/08/27/revealed-one-in-25-solicitors-in-scotland-is-transsexual-says-law-society-86908-22517132/ on the A Gender Agenda website
Quote:A study showed that four per cent of their 10,848 members were “currently living and working in the opposite gender assigned to them at birth”.I wonder how the 4% figure compares with other industries, and with the broader community.

Guest29/08/2010 at 6:21 amI’m always a bit wary of articles about surveys but that aside I was rather distressed by the nature of some of the readers comments that appeared below the article. We clearly still have a long way to go.

Guest29/08/2010 at 6:29 amOn a positive note, at least the reporting by the newspaper was unbiased and simply factual. That is a positive thing.

Guest29/08/2010 at 10:31 pmWith that many TS Solicitors the paper could not afford to do the wrong thing!

Guest30/08/2010 at 9:22 amWell there are the predictable responses of barristers taking silk, and identifying solicitors by their briefs … but those aside a very interesting report. Law Society surveys are generally pretty accurate. Wonder how it compares with other professions.

Guest30/08/2010 at 1:42 pm25% Scots legals as transgender: I think thats Great! That number of transexuals has to be good for all of us. As a Scot I’m very tickled by the news. Thank you. Of course the media like to get public opinion that generally is at opposed ends of the spectrum. Think of all those people whose opinion is in the middle. I think that there are lots of folk who are largely indifferent and wonder what all the fuss is about. I’m always glad when people react to me without any shock. Double takes I can deal with!

Guest30/08/2010 at 2:38 pmEr, not to burst your bubble Roisin, but 1 in 25 is 4% not 25%.
4% is still very high. It is 80 times higher than the “official” population average of 1 in 2,000 (0.05%)
I agree that having such a high percentage of TG people in a recognised profession is good for us all.
I’ve also found that the vast majority of people just accept me as I am. The media certainly rarely targets that silent middle majority.

Guest30/08/2010 at 9:48 pmPip always maintained the percentage was closer to 5%, just through anecdotal research for her books. The Gender Trap, her last one interviewed hundreds of trans-gender girls from all works of life.

The Gender Trap, her last one interviewed hundreds of trans-gender girls from all works of life.I’ve attended a number of lectures that suggest the figure is around 1 in 100 (1%) which give significantly more weight to a low percentage of the population over the micro-percentages of 0.001%-0.05% that seem to appear as ‘official figures’. Given that I’d love to know where the ‘official figures’ come from and whether their collection methods are a significant dynamic to their value.

Guest31/08/2010 at 1:48 pmThanks for pointing out my maths gaff Julie. Perhaps it was wishful thinking! I can say that I’v had an overwhelmingly positive reponse to my transgender status in Hobart. I know I’m very fortunate in this.
I’m just glad to hear of news like the Scottish report. I’m very thankful for all of those trailblazers that came before me. They have certainly made it easier to be transgender. We do have a way to go but I am heartened by the reponse I’v received. Maybe one day we wont need to tell people but be accepted naturally. I’m optimistic that it may happen in my lifetime.
Best wishes to all you girls
