I have been lucky enough to find a hair salon close by that are very much Transgender aware. I recently had one of my wigs trimmed at Hairhouse Warehouse in the Westfield Garden City Shopping Centre in Mt Gravatt.

My hair was trimmed by Crystal, a Senior Hairdresser, and she was very friendly and did an excellent hair trim/tidy. I thoroughly washed and conditioned my hair piece the day before and with a little privacy changed hair pieces at the salon. I went on a Monday which is their least busiest day. To be noted is they will only cut/trim Human Hair Wigs, Crystal explained that in her experience Synthetic Wigs blunted and generally wreaked havoc with her scissors. That’s OK with me as I prefer Natural Hair Wigs anyway. The photo shows the before and after my recent trim by Crystal.

I have been using a hair piece for years and have tried many different types. I was eventually found Kylie Clarke wig making. I was her first TG customer but I have sent many people to her since. She is in Sydney. She makes wigs for films, plays and TV and shared an Emmy award last year. Check out her web site.
The reason I mention this is, she taught me that human hair wigs should NOT be cut with scissors. She recommends that a razor only be used. So I suggest that if your hairdresser is using scissors on your expensive hair piece seek further advice.

    Hi Lisa

Thank you for making me more aware. Who would have thought that there was so much involved in having a hair cut lol.

I have checked with an alternative source I have and their response was that razor cutting does often help achieve a natural look, although sometimes split ends create a problem at a later date. They explained that because there is no natural taper from using a razor, i.e. the hair in the wig is almost all the same length, thinning scissors are sometimes the better alternative, giving a more natural, slightly uneven, wispy look.

I guess they all have their styles and reasons for how they cut the hair.

    Hugs, Emily.
