  • Searching Location by Post Code……?

Posted by Anonymous on 05/10/2009 at 8:20 am

Under “Members”, there is a search facility by location. But it only brings up state eg. ACT, NSW, QLd, etc. NSW is a big place.

I wonder whether a search showing location by postcode (where that is recorded in profiles of course !) would be useful for people wanting/needing to contact others in there local area ? That might be useful in encouraging the arranging of local face to face networking, meetings, organising social and local events ?

    Privacy issues ??????

    Just a thought.

All those members who have published a 4 digit post code are plotted on the google map.
Members see the map at sufficiently high maximum zoom that finding members in a particular area should not be a problem.

Its a bit more high tech than sorting by postcode but a lot more useful as adjacent postcodes are frequently not brought together by a straight number sort.

Maybe the google map requires some more help in how to use it?

If for some reason you don’t want to use the google map on TR to find out where members live (why not?) – or you want to find out where any other postcode is- you can use the technology used by TR.

    just go to maps.google.com.au
then just type the postcode into the box…..and it shows you where the postcode is.

Except… if you type an illegal postcode it doesn’t tell you – and plots a place in Thailand.

Yes – some of our members have created fictitious postcodes and if I let it, google would plot them as being in SE Asia or South America.

Technology – sometimes you can have too much of it!

Good ole google has placed 3 others and i out in the bush. We be those bare foot trannies that have wombat stu for tucker…

I think not, modern appliances and heels to die for in the big city of gosford.

I really liked the old postcode search and others did too.

I wonder if our sweet moderator would consider the old way again Pleeeeease??

It was simple and it worked.

    Again Pleeeeeeease ??

The reason Google puts people with a Gosford postcode out in the bush is because if you look at the geographic limits of the post code you will find that Google has it correct. It doesn’t weight the “center” of the postcode by the number of people living in each sq km of the postcode – it just computes the mid point – and in Gosford’s case it is in the bush.

    But
    a) all the girls shown near you by Google are in the same postcode
    b) who is to say that some girls with Gosford postcodes don’t actually live in the bush
    c) in areas with large postcodes searching for girls with yours, and your neighbouring postcodes might be a practical way of finding members nearby….BUT the vast majority of TR members live in small post codes which don’t have a simple relationship to each other. And so the sort is next to useless

Conclusion – you can’t please everyone all the time – and the Google maps do look impressive (IMHO). And no, we won’t be doing a straight numerical sort of the post codes again.

any time I am unsure of where post codes are, I use
    http://auspost.com.au/apps/postcode.html

    Can we have both?

The post code search was fab for some

    and

I believe that some prefer the Google.

    Simple answer …. NO

Longer answer …. not bloodly likley

Very long answer …. I just don’t have the time to code all the new pages it would need – just for a few people who think it would suit them.

Sorry – but those are the answers!
