Having taught women’s self defence and having learnt and taught two forms of karate, I would recommend that anyone really wanting to learn effective self defence , avoid classes designed for women. I say this because, IMO women have to unlearn a lot of their gendering that teaches them not to be aggressive and this can limit the effectiveness of what they are taught. It is no criticism of women but they usually do not play contact sport eg , as they grow up and this can make them less able to be physical enough with an attacker to be effective. If you are going to bother learning how to defend yourself , then a bit of “overkill” is better than not enough , you may only have one chance to survive an attack.
Of course if you are a woman and gendered as such, you have no choice but to do what you can but if you want to learn self defence properly then do a martial arts class and spend some years learning properly rather than a few week course. These can lead people to think that they know more than they really do.
One overlooked MA and one of the most vicious and effective MA around is a good Tai Chi class . The late Earl Montaigue headed a style of TC that was based on the original martial aspects and I would reccomend one ask any teacher if the self defence aspects are also taught.
Of course if , “politically ” one is wedded to a women’s SD group , then go for it , but that doesn’t mean it will work if you are attacked. IMO.
