  • shorter wigs

Hopefully this isn’t a “well duh!” kind of question but here goes

For those who have shorter wigs (I will define short as above shoulder length), do you find that they are cooler to wear in summer by virtue of being less of a mass on your head or does it make no difference and extra layers are the same and in the heat, you still feel just as hot?

    Hi Melissa,

Over the years I’ve experiment with wearing different lengths in the Summer and while around the neck is cooler when wearing a shorter wig I find that it’s the top of the head that is still hot and irritating in the Summer. I’ve tried different brands, cheap one and expensive ones, and there really isn’t any difference. I have found that by carefully altering the inner webbing can make a difference. Cutting away some of the inner support lets the air circulate better but I made a mess of a few and learnt to be careful or it ruin the way the wig sat on my head. After stuffing up the first one I decided to buy a couple of very cheap wigs from the Vic Market to experiment with. If you decide to try making some gaps my only advice is study the design and alter just tiny pieces at a time. Don’t be like me and don’t rush it lol.

    Thankyou for your response Alison

I guess one of the two main ways heat tries to escape your body is through the top of your head and through your feet and if you are putting an extra layer or two on it, it would tend to make it hotter.

I do have trouble finding wigs that fit in general anyway due to the size of my head and while it is tempting to treat myself to a new wig, it really wouldn’t be a good use of money as I hardly dress these days at all and while I would like to go out somewhere (even when there is no global pandemic), I only have myself for company and so I usually don’t bother
