Side effects of Cyproterone
Posted by Anonymous on 18/04/2014 at 4:19 amDoes anyone here take Cyproterone? I have tried Spironolactone twice, but both times with negative side effects as a result of significantly reduced sodium levels. As a result, my Dr has prescribed Cyproterone. I’m a bit wary of swapping one set of side effects for another, so I’m wondering if anyone can tell me what their own experiences have been.
I’m particularly interested in hearing about effects and side effects.
Thank you for your help.

Guest19/04/2014 at 12:42 amHey there.
Sorry to hear you are having side effects.
I had been taking Spiro, but not only was there no side effects, pretty much had no effect at all.
I am taking the Cypro, but no side effects that I can see or feel at this time.
So, this is has probably not been very informative for you.
Hope you have better luck soon though.

I’ve been on Cyproterone for 11months. I had been on Finasteride 5mg but that did nothing noticeable for me. The Cypro has very successfully dropped my testosterone to zilch (<0.09 at the last check). There has been some regain of head hair where it was thinning, there is less body hair and muscle tone. But as I'm also using estrogen patches I can't definitively separate the effects. Unless you count loss of muscularity and strength there have been no physical adverse side effects. Mentally the lower testosterone means I'm less comfortable taking risks (eg going out dressed unless to a familiar venue) and have a reduced drive and enthusiasm for dressing regularly, though I still enjoy it when I do.
I hope this helps. -

Guest19/04/2014 at 2:13 amHi Michelle and Carol
Thank you both for your replies. I guess I’m looking for reassurance as I’ve had some very negative effects with Spiro and there are some horror stories out there about Cyproterone. I tend to be quite sensitive to any drugs, but now that I’ve finally found the resolve to start transition, I would devastated if I couldn’t continue because my body can’t cope with the HRT regimen.
I guess I’ll just have to give it a to and see what happens.

Good luck Andrea. There really is no substitute for a cautious trial yourself. we are all individuals and reactions can vary.

Guest20/04/2014 at 8:35 pmOn F/b there is an invaluable American page called GENDER RESEARCH for ALL GENDERS, ..chockers with all kinds of medical research articles specific to the interests of the Transgender community in particular.
I would go there for opinions and research about HRT drugs, ..then talk with my GP

Have you tried Provera in conjuction with E patches.
Had the cyprotone prescribed but have not had to take it, as my T level is so low -
