Stopping HRT for surgery
Posted by Jennifer_1 on 28/06/2013 at 2:04 amI need some information if anyone can help me. I have to go for bypass surgery next week and have to go off my HRT for about 6 to 8 weeks.
I believe that this may cause mood swings and some emotional upset. Does anyone have any idea what I can expect and suggestions for lessening the impact.
Many thanks
Jen

Not taking HRT for my surgeries I noticed no ‘mood’ changes at all. However I did notice the effects of hot flushes – which are bearable but just inconvenient. (Lasting like 10 minutes at time) As I was in a 36°C environment I may have felt this more than perhaps if being in a conditioned environment.
Of course everyone is different, is taking different drugs for HRT so your experience may be differ – In any case I think it is all tolerable – well it was in my case.
I hope your recovery goes smoothly

Guest29/06/2013 at 12:47 amHi,
My experience of coming off hormones for surgery has been horrific. Mood swings, irritability, depression, anxiety, insomnia. Consequently my hormone levels are closely watched and no surgeon now want s me to come off them for surgery. For me and those who need to deal with me the benefits of staying on hormones for surgery/ recovery/ post op care outweigh the risks, (or makes their job easier).
Though it is different for everybody, some have no effects. -
Thank you for the feedback. I don’t know if it is coming off the hormones or just anxiety about the surgery but I have had a few really good howls, I cant stop the tears. It will be interesting days ahead I think.
Again, many thanks

Hi all,
Just a quick update. I had the surgery about three and a half weeks ago and have been off HRT for about for about five weeks. Oh yes, there are mood swings, depression, crying fits, etc.. It has tapered off a fair bit but it was not pleasant. I am guessing that each person is different and may experience this in different ways.
At the moment I am impatient to restart HRT, I know my doctor is concerned about blood clotting and estrogen BUT this issue is not negotiable. I cannot go back to who I was.
Cheers

One last update. I have been back on HRT for a week and a half. I feel so much better. All is well with the world again.
