I think its a marvellous idea ! The idea of using anothers facillity in lieu of a dedicated members or member’s property until such a place has real merit
in it ! I in past years went to yoga retreats in the blue mountains that were held in buddist owned places far from the maddening crowd – what about considering going to one of these
The idea of spending a weekend as a girl is so exciting !

I’d love to be involved as an attendee and matron, a good idea and concept that really needs to be explored.

This would certainly be a wonderful thing but unless there happened to be a t-girl out there who already had property and time on her hands I think it would be difficult to maintain long term given our (apparent) numbers Australia wide.

However the idea of contacting gay/lesbian friendly or exclusive establishments with a view to organising outings etc may be worth following up. I’m thinking of suggesting a “register” of such places, perhaps based on information from posts(?). Of course I’m aware that this means that someone would need to keep it up to date for it to be effective. And I’m not sure whether that type of thing counts as advertising and would that matter and God knows what else that I don’t even know about.

Now I’m sounding ditsy and I’m not even a proper blonde!!

I was thinking more about a “local ‘ event in the short term – where we could have a weekend in sydney ,Brisbane ,melb etc then later on a australia wide gathering
Perhaps in NSW the Gender Center could be of assistance in finding a place ?

The Casa Susanna story, brilliant, pioneering, daring for that period. Great story, wonderful photographs!

Time has moved on – mostly in our favour. Now, there is little to fear except fear itself.

In the few years that I have been a part of the transgender community, I have experienced very few problems with weekend retreats. Similar to restaurants or shopping, there is no discrimination against girls in renting a property or going to a hotel.

The Valley Girl events are a good example. The first was run three years ago by an adventurous girl from Canberra – you know who you are! A dozen girls attended with the numbers doubling on the Saturday “open house”. My first weekend as Jan, I had the most wonderful time! Valley Girl 08 and 09 were private and run by the so-called “League of Extraordinary Ladies”. Luxury properties, excellent food and wine, a fashion and make-up consultant and very good company. Valley Girl 10 is being planned for Canberra mid 2010 and there may also be a Valley Girl in the Hunter this year. These events are by invitation and are sold out quickly.

The issue is not finding “friendly” places – they all are and we should not apologise to anyone for who we are. The problem is more managing the event as a business project. Finding the property, putting a large amount of money up front, inviting the right people and then making it all happen to ensure people have a great time. And of course not losing money on the venture!

I am not very active in the community anymore, having “retired” to mainstream, but I am happy to assist with any bright ideas. And if it really good, I want an invite!

    Cheers Jan
