  • Suggestions (Moving TransFormal off the forums)

I like to keep up with the forum posts as much as I can, but at different times they dissapear off the new posts list far to quickly for me to catch up.
Transformal is one of those times, I see a post I want to read but don’t have time that evening and by the next morning it has been pushed off the list by half a dozen Transformal posts. not that I have a problem with the Transformal posts but they do make it difficult to keep up with the everyday posts in the other forums. The problem might be with my memory not remembering what the posts were titled, but nonetheless I feel that this idea might be worth exploring at least.

What I would like to suggest is that the Transformal Forum has its own dedicated new posts list on the home page, that way when there is a lot of new information about transformal, everyone can still keep up with it but can also still keep up with the normal everyday posts as well. They won’t be pushed off the page before anyone gets to read them, which would also ensure that they get fair exposure to the members before they drop off the list and get lost forever in the archives of the forums.

I think Transformal has grown into a large entity all of it’s own now anyway and really deserves to be on its own pages with its own seperate forum. I know that this would probably be too difficult to interlace with the TGR website, but it really does deserve to have it’s own web pages and forum within them on TGR. Having its own pages may also make it more accessible to non TGR members who might like to be considered for a ticket to Transformal, with some suitable vetting of course. wouldn’t do to let the wrong sort of person into a function like that.

Perhaps another way to provide news about Transformal, cafe nights, AGA events etc etc , would be to incorporate a ticker at the bottom of all the TGR pages, displaying all the lastest news from TF and trannytix etc. This would provide constant up to date information to all the members all the time with no need to worry if the message was getting through. In fact I believe that there may be some free open source tickers available on the internet that can be reprogrammed to perform this very function.

This in no way means that I am against Transformal but merely indicates how it imposes itself on the forum without due consideration for the other daily forum posts. I realise that there may not have been another way to deliver the news, but hopefully my suggestions will open up some new ideas worthy of investigation, so that we can get the news about Transformal but not at the expense of the other forum posts.

I won’t duplicate here what i said about the front page algorithms in response to Chloe’s recent suggestions:
    http://forum.tgr.net.au/cms/forum/F145/5359-359
But it is worth noting that the front page selections will always mean that somebody potentially doesn’t see a new post. As Chloe said
“In my case > homepage> forums> new posts since last viewing. That way I never miss anything. “

I will add that the current algorithms do not highlight posts but rather the threads where new posts have occurred. If multiple posts occur in one thread then only one reference occurs on the front page. So relying on the list to find all new posts is not a good idea.

    Quote:
the next morning it has been pushed off the list by half a dozen Transformal posts

Pointing to a specific posting topic as being the culprit does highlight the impossibility of designing a system to please everyone.
The assertion that a valuable post “has been pushed off the list by half a dozen Transformal posts” is hard to credit – as that would require 6 separate threads to be active at the same time. If it did happen it would be an isolated event that would indicate a lot of other members were sharing their excitement about what is a unique event.

“I think Transformal has grown into a large entity all of it’s own now anyway”.

Think again. Elsewhere there have been complaints on how hard it is to motivate the community to take action – well that translates effectively into trying to sell tickets. Transformal does have its own web site (because it isn’t a TgR exclusive event). But it is a boutique event that would rapidly collapse if denied the opportunity to engage TgR members through the forums.

    Are you sure?
There is only one way to find out. Support these events and then I suspect you will find the TransFormal posts in the forums relevant and exciting and not a distraction. Give it a go!

I know what Chloe said and it seems she was right, I posted a fresh reply on the subject in question and it did not appear on the new posts list.

I suppose I would be wrong in inferring that you feel I don’t support these events, but on the contrary I do support them. I just can’t attend them yet.
    Support yes, attend unfortunately not.

Actually I’m right – you cannot rely on the front page list to have any particular post in it. And why should you as there are alternative ways to get all the new posts…

But I can’t see any valid reason that the front page should alert you to your own posts. After all if you forgot you posted you have bigger things to worry about than an algorithm in TgR!!!

So I’ve tweaked the algorithm tonight – and now you will never see your own posts in the front page section.

Does this change also affect the What is new in the forums section of TgR?

No. Just the lists on the right hand side of the front page.
