TgR Webcasts/eSeminar/whatever
Posted by Adrian on 23/08/2011 at 12:50 pmAn idea… what do you all think?
Quote:We nominate a time during the week when a specific topic of interest will be discussed in the chat room.
The idea being that a group of people can then come together and talk about the topic.
The upcoming webcast will be advertised on TgR as an event. The chat room will have a special room set aside for the Webcast. And each webcast will have a moderator (who can ensure the Webcast stays on topic) and perhaps an expert or guest to facilitate the discussion.
After an initial warming up/settling in time, the moderator will announce the webcast is open, and the chat log from that time onwards will subsequently be released as a transcript (in case you can’t actually log in at the nominated time)
What sort of things might we have as topics…..
..national issues affecting the community
.. organisational – with members of organizations presenting
..common interests like hair removal, makeup….
..topical issues… like fashion
..local issues .. like Melbourne social lifeWould we have enough moderators?
Would we have enough experts/guests?
Would we have enough good topics? Is it worth trying?

What an excellent idea!
(…. oh, and I’m adding a few more words here to get above the number of words needed to avoid the following – “your message appears to be too brief for these forums. Please review your post to ensure that you are saying something worthwhile. ( 23|3|0)” ).

I think the idea of a chat room Topic announced ahead of time and perhaps held in a separate room is a good idea. Perhaps ‘webcast’ is not the best name as that implies media being distributed one way over the web whereas this would be an interactive discussion topic.
I put my hand up for moderating.
I think though a start time and end time should be also be announced.
I agree a summery of the chats main points could be posted in the forums (if all attendees agree) afterwords. A summery is usually better as I find many chats that are copied and pasted sometimes become very long and many people just don’t read through them.

OK – webcast was a word in my head late last night….
eSeminar? What else? And re-transcript – I think a direct copy of the segment is good because
a) it can happen semi-automatically. Summaries require work and lay the author open to accusation of bias. The more effort something like this idea takes to make happen the less likely it is to be sustained I think.
b) the chat room needs a bit of discipline to stop the idle banter that is common in the main room. Knowing that your trite 2 word comment is going to be distributed to many might act as a constraint.Any other thoughts?

I believe that the idea is worth trying, it has the potential for value adding over and above the “Day to day friendly chat” that is part of our sharing.
The potential for inter-organisational communication is good in my view however there are pointers from the vicliaison experience that indicate to me that a fair bit of relationship development is likely to be required.
A calender of events say 1 to 3 months would seem like a good concept to me.
Perhaps the concept may also be considered in the potential TGR survey

Guest24/08/2011 at 7:58 amI like the sound of this new chatroom concept, I guess any problem can be ironed out as we proceed as long as people are willing to be patient.
I can see some problems where a slow typer ( as I am ) may be constructing a juicy bit of thread and then be made obsolete if the thread moves on from where it was when thought processes began. The alternative may mean short ill considered inputs though this may be rectified as things proceed.I guess normal anti flaming rules apply especially if touchy subjects are discussed- but then again those are the only ones really worth debating!
We could discuss films, books, etc as well as the usual ? -
With the transcript, where would it be posted on TgR?
Will we need a new forum section for these discussions?Jenifur Charne

I don’t imagine the transcript being for discussion in a forum sense. So any read only forum area will do – presumably in the same place as we advertise the upcoming schedule of seminars??????

Yeah, that’d work.
I was just thinking on where would TgR mebers go on the forum to view the transcript, when I realised that it had not, yet, been discussed.Jenifur Charne

As to possible Topics, well some of the most viewed forum posts are mainly all to do with temporary body modifications. Perhaps something along these lines might be some possible first topics?

Ok – to summarise
Looks like generally people think the e-Seminar idea has some mileage.
To go forward we would need to decide
a) when we would hold them
b) how often
c) some topics for the first few e-Seminars.a) is easy since I’ve added a new statistic to the statistics page which shows when the chat room is most active. On that basis – Monday nights or Thursday at 8pm would be the obvious choice…
b) how often…. well that depends how many topics are queued up ready to go…
Which brings me to c) – we need some concrete, specific suggestions for topics to get this off the ground.
As I wrote earlier they can be
Quote:.national issues affecting the community
.. organisational – with members of organizations presenting
..common interests like hair removal, makeup….
..topical issues… like fashion
..local issues .. like Melbourne social lifeSo fire away with specific topics please…nothing general please.
Something that would attract people interested to listen, or to contribute..
but not so wide open it just becomes another chat room! -

Guest02/09/2011 at 4:30 amHi Amanda
Here is an extract from a promotion for a webinar run by Pink Essence:
I’m hosting a LIVE call-in show tonight – Tonight’s topic, Chaz Bono on Dancing with the Stars, the “ITS WORTH IT” initiative by Lori Bailey, Special Guest: Voice Pathologist Kathe Perez! Join us at http://www.PINKessence.com 8:30pm EDT TONIGHT! You do NOT need to be a member to watch the show on the home page – viewership IS limited, tune in early!
so there are few ideas. I hope you have found this useful.

Some eSeminar topic suggestions from the chat room last night:
Fashion: TransGender fashion tips, current fashion trends, colour co-ordination
Your experience in coming out the first timeGenerally… good topics are one where the participants can share experience and ideas
Bad topics are ones that invite participants to disagree with each other and argue. -
In summary this thread discussed a formalised seminar
– advertised well in advance
– to be held in the chat room
– with a moderator and preferably a guest speaker
– and a transcript published afterwardsWe never reached the point in this thread of selecting suitable topics to discuss and discussion died a year ago.
In the meantime, I upgraded the chat room so it has the capability to host en e-Seminar if we wanted to.
And so the question is… we have the capability… do we want to try using it?
If so… what would be good topics.
And who might be prepared to act as the guest speaker to get things rollingIf we can get a topic and a speaker we can give it a try.
Topics:
Generally… good topics are one where the participants can share experience and ideas
Bad topics are ones that invite participants to disagree with each other and argue. We could choose topics from the most popular threads in the foums:
Quote:Tucking to get a smooth look
Make your own breast forms
Herbal breast enlargement
Taxi Club
Aarow Club
The Imperial Hotel Erskineville
How to get cleavage
Plucking Beard
The feminine voice
driving dressed
What is Passing about? But many of these topics have limited appeal to the community as a whole
We could choose topics from the highest rated threads in the forums…
Quote:Genie bras
Andropause – Friend or Foe?
Changing genders: Article from news.com.au
Transgender schoolgirl takes her examsOr we could just choose general topics that we think will be of interest….
Quote:Fashion- TransGender fashion tips, current fashion trends, colour co-ordination
Coming Out – Your experience in coming out the first time
What else???If this thread dies a second time I’ll take it as a NO and remove the chat room feature.

I would find some of the topics interesting, but knowing how much time and effort is needed to prepare a presentation properly, I wonder if some presenters may be disappointed with the response to so much effort.
It would be good if the presentation could be made so as to be accessed at different times. If in summer and at 8pm in Sin City, it is only 5pm in the more civilised western third of the country so timing may be a problem for we underpriviledged few.

I don’t think the concept includes any presentation…and other than the fact that the transcript will be published afterwards it will be an on-line interactive session. So no need for lots of preparation before hand.
And it would have to be fairly late on the east coast to allow as many timezones to participate as possible.Let me be totally definitive about the format given experience elsewhere and the feedback so far. Then we can move on from generalities and actually commit to topics – otherwise the idea is going no where.
=============================================
e-Seminar Provisional Format
WHERE
a) Will be held in the TgR chat room in a dedicated roomWHEN
b) On a weekday evening at a convenient time for all Australian mainland timezonesWHO
c) A group of “panelists” (speakers) will volunteer to share their experiences about the topic and to address any questions from “the audience”.
d) A facilitator will host the seminar – the facilitator will not participate in the discussion.
e) All members can log into the chat room and enter the seminar as “the audience”WHAT
f) The topic of the eSeminar will be announced at least 2 weeks in advance and members will be invited to submit any questions in advance.AGENDA
g) The seminar will start with a warm-up period when everyone can test their connections and feel comfortable in the room.
h) After the warm up period the seminar will be logged to a transcript that will be published afterwards (after editorial tidying up).
j) The facilitator will invite each panel member to share their personal thoughts on the topic (this is the only part that could be written in advance and cut&pasted into the chat)
j) The facilitator will then work through any questions that have been submitted – soliciting opinions from the panel.
k) “The audience” can at any time ask questions or offer an opinion. Posts from the audience will be held by the moderator and approved to appear at suitable times during the seminar.=============================================
I do NOT want to discuss the mechanics any more at this stage.
What I am interested in is CONTENT.
To hold the first eSeminar I’m looking for 3 or 4 people who are prepared to be on the panel for a specified topic.
So to get this idea running… if you have topic(s) that you are prepared to be a panel member for please let me know. The topic can be one on the list above or a new one. Or you could indicate you are willing to be on the panel irrespective of what topic is chosen!
If we get a quorum we can try the first Seminar using the format above, and THEN discuss how we might change things subsequently.
