Time taken for antiandrogens to work

Posted by Anonymous on 11/10/2010 at 12:22 am

    Hi Girls

I started spirolactone five weeks ago. I was wondering how long other users had before there were any effects. I know everyone is different but I am interested at this very early stage

I have experienced minor gynecomastia but not other effects and I am wondering how long it takes for body hair to change.

    Thanks

    Sarah

What else are you taking Sarah? It’s the total hormonal approach that counts and it’s a very individual thing. Also it’s typical that after evaluation of the initial hormonal dose on your testosterone that further adjustments will be made. Initial breast sensitivity and some growth is normal.

My sentiments too here Sarah, what else are you taking along with the Spiro.? If you are stopping the production of Testo. then you need to be producing Oestrogen or supplying it if you aren’t producing enough to counteract the lack of the other as far as I think that I understood what my doc. said. Everyone is different too as you know, we all end up with different results and for an example, I spent my first 10 months with no blockers at all with a T. count of nothing before it spiked.

    Hi Sarah

Many other factors to consider than just T blockers as the others have said. I’m 6 months on Spiro and nearly 5 on Estradiol.

Hair growth slowed but it seemed to take ages to have any noticeable effect. Hair growth cycles vary and, as hair is already dead, you have to go through at least one complete cycle to have any noticeable difference. So – 3 to 6 months on that point. And don’t expect it to disappear completely from your body like I did. Hopefully, in another 6 months I hope to tell you they were all wrong. In the meantime, some other form of removal is adviseable, shaving, laser, electolysis, waxing. Hairy titties are not pretty titties.

Breast growth? You need more than just Spiro to get any noticeable difference there, depending on your natural “E” levels. It’s different for everyone. Otherwise you just get Moobs.

Your body needs hormones, either Testosterone or Estrogen. I am surprised that your doctor would not prescribe something else to go with the Spiro.

Good luck with your journey, I am glad you are heading in a direction – any direction is good. Otherwise you just get nowhere. I hope it is going well for you.

Spironolactone really makes you wee, so make sure you keep up the water intake. Hair reduction does take a while, waxing is the best. I was getting waxed every 3 weeks and the roots were so big i bled heaps.
It has taken 12 months for my hair thing to become controlled, i have had no laser only waxing.

Another point to remember is from my endo. Your hair won’t necessarily decrease either but it will become a lot more finer in texture. HRT doesn’t kill off the follicles is the reason for that comment, the hair simply becomes a lot more like a woman.

My experience so far. I’m five months into Progynova (estradiol) only. My current endo here in Hobart has suggested spiro at some future date and possibly progesterone. When I spoke to the endo at Monash he was adamant that for the vast majority of cases they can find the amount of oestrogen that will ultimately do the same job as spiro or the like.

I’m getting a steady reduction in body hair regrowth through epilation and the effects of the prgoynova. I’ve had my face lasered in sections so that the difference between the done and not yet done is quite marked and so I feel I’m making progress there too. I’ve also experienced some development of my nipples in terms of size, shape AND sensistivity, or should I say, connectedness to certain other parts of me. So far so good and although my initial oestrogen surge fell away to starting levels I’m quite happy to double the dose (as per endo’s advice) and leave it at that for the moment. If I really feel that I am spinning the wheels then I might seek further assistance through other hormones/drugs such as spiro.

    Hi Girls

    Thanks for all your replies

I asked to not start estrogen until later because my two year electrolysis and laser battle is some way from over and I was worried about breast growth for fear of transitioning into a female yeti….okay maybe not that bad

I know it takes time and I expected no result at all so the breast growth however minor and exciting is rather premature when I have been patient for so long.

I wish you all much luck with your lives girls – great to get such fantastic help

spiro is an anti androgen and is is not likely to produce much of a result alone as i understand but the reduction in the course hair seemed to take about four or five months for me on a combined hormone anti-androgen treatment, is that what you wanted to know?

Thanks Kristyana and all who have been so helpful

Yes that was the answer I just was looking for other’s experiences. We all have such different body chemistry so I know there is no rules. my t level was the same as a herd of mallee bulls so it will take some defeating and my dose is high.

I was rather surprised by the gynecomastia, although its not unusual and will remain minor so i read. It was sudden especially as the spiro has lead to some minor weight loss as well. Like other people I also had some early tiredness but that was short lived.

My endo has been great but there is never enough of an empirical sample of us in medical studies to make an reliable assumptions

Anyway is great to hear from the all. I have fought this for years and giving in and going for an evaluation and starting the journey this year have me very uplifting

Its lovely to read such a sense of community

    Thank you

Re breasts pre transition. You can actually grow them without comment up to a point. I was a full A, no one knew. My psych reported that one girl was a full B…….she just disguised them with loose clothing. People observe less than you think they will and even if they notice something …being trans is the last thing they will think of. I had small breasts, pierced ears, plucked eyelashes and varnished (clear) nails…..no one had a clue…..
