Travelling to Kyoto Japan
Posted by Anonymous on 16/06/2008 at 11:59 pmHi I’m heading oversea’s for work. I’m going to Kyoto Japan for 3 weeks and wondering if anyone knows of CD/TV/TG friendly pubs or clubs over there? It will be my first time to Japan and wanting to know if it will be safe to go out dressed? I’m Six foot without heels and will already stand out in a crowd when not dressed. Any responses from fellow travellers would be much appreciated.
Skye.

Guest17/06/2008 at 9:39 amTry Google, it could be the main source. Also try Lonely Planet or one of the other similar publications. These days they have all sorts of information.

I am sure there are ‘Clubs’ in the Kyoto area. Regarding general going out (days etc). foreigners stand out in Japan anyway, so you will get ‘looks’ no matter what clothing you wear. I would suggest only traveling (international) in the look that your photo ID shows, to avoid any complications. Have a great time. It will be warmish *smiles*

Guest18/06/2008 at 10:10 amThis paper not only gives an overview of the transgender word in contemporary Japan but also attempts to illustrate the male to female cross-dressing (MTFCD) community in Shinjuku, Tokyo, which plays an important role in the overall transgender world and how people in the community think and live, by conducting the comprehensive fieldwork. The MTFCD community consists of amateur cross-dressers and their patrons, and it is formed around about 10 bars/clubs in Shinjuku. This community differentiates itself from the gay community in their customs and consciousness; they tend to recognize gender based on gender performance rather than biological sex, which is usually accepted for distinguishing sex. Therefore, a MTF cross-dresser with feminine performance is considered as a “woman,†regardless of one’s physical and biological conditions. Because of this recognition of gender based on gender performance, people in the community are able to develop the “quasi-heterosexual†relationships as men and “women.â€

Guest02/07/2008 at 7:16 amHi
I went to Japan late year but the club in Tokyo are not hard to find!
Yes Shinjuku has clubs but remember that this area of Tokyo is its RED LIGHT area.
Also if your Japanese is not up to a good chat with other Japanese people you can find your self out in the cold.
Best for you to write to the clubs to see if you are able to go. Next find out the cost of the change room is plus locker. Also if a time system is used in the club for you, for some clubs time is money. For going out in Tokyo dress up no one will look! it a very free place to live in. But if you are thinking of going places out side of the Tokyo like small towns I would think NOT.

Guest03/07/2008 at 11:08 amThanks everyone for the input. I leave on Saturday and will be mainly in kyoto but 2 days in Tokyo in Shinjuku area. I have almost zero Japanese language skills so that might be a problem if dressed or not. I have nothing to loose going out dressed as nobody should recognise me!! I will be carefull like normal.
Again thanks for all the advise.

Guest03/07/2008 at 11:46 amThe Japanese are polite and undemonstrative as a rule though curious. Japan’s an extremely safe place and it’s hard to imagine there will be any problems going out dressed….just remember to leave the high heels at the door and you won’t offend any one. Have a great time, it’s an interesting country.

Guest07/07/2008 at 11:07 amHi All,
I arrived in Kyoto this morning and as soon as I got the hotel i dressed as Skye and went for a walk around the town. I had to leave the hotel key at reception which got a few smirks as i’m the only westerner in the hotel. Anyway I walked around the town for about a hour and half before heading back to hotel. Would have stayed out longer but very humid and feet a little sore. I had more females looking at me than males while walking.

Guest11/08/2008 at 7:15 amhello skye
it’s been a while since I looked in on your forum, I hope all is going well for you. I hope the time Japan was wonderful and the people were friendly, I hope you can tell us of your adventures.
I found Tokyo somewhat a freeing moment of my life, I did find it hard to communicate with the local Japanese Tgirls I did have one or two pen friends I met up with, my bad Japanese and their poor English started as a uphill battle which in all good fun turned out to be okay. I got see a lot of Tokyo at the right time as my pen friends had to work most of the day is very long hours.
So I hope that you can jot down some little bit of the adventure.Penny
