At the Friday Supper at Transformal I announced that the TgR website is on the move. Although the current website has had cosmetic face lifts over the years it is still running on a platform developed at the turn of the century and obsoleted 6 years ago. The uniqueness of the web site which once was an attraction is now a millstone as it cannot be upgraded or enhanced….and the developer is rapidly forgetting how it all worked.

So it was time for change!

The challenge was to build a new site, providing contemporary functionality.
To transfer 640 users, their profiles, their albums and their reputation.
And to move across over 18,000 articles out of the forums.

That long task is finally nearing completion and a new web site has formed, hidden to most, in the shadows. But before we can throw the switch and turn out the lights on the old site we need to explore, break, and validate the new site.

I have created this forum area to document that process. Hopefully I have got the permissions correct and everyone will be able to contribute to this exciting process.

In a nutshell what will you find in the new site?
    [ul]It is mobile friendly
Direct links with social networking sites like Facebook and Google +
The opportunity for more membership categories (e.g. Partners)
Groups, so like minded members can have discussions outside the forums
Integrated chat as part of the main website
In-site messaging replaces email to provide a more reliable way of communicating
    Commercially supported
    .. and more
    [/ul]

Interested…then watch this forum for news on how to get involved testing the new site.

For starters – here is a pretty cra**py movie I made showing the main features of the new site.

Thanks to everyone who has visited the new web site to check out their profile.
I’m not hearing any cries of agony/desperation/frustration so perhaps we will soon be ready to throw the big website switch.

Provisionally the timetable I propose is:

    A) Monday 16th evening – New web site cloned again off the old site to check any recent fixes.

    B) Friday 13th – Old web site content is frozen (no updates possible to profiles/forums/etc

    C) Saturday 14th – New web site goes live (with email enabled). Old web site read-only (and old digests disabled).

Some time later (when new website is fully indexed) old web site will be turned off.

Just to stress to everyone Thursday 12th is the LAST chance to check that your profile/blogs/posts/ect have been transferred correctly. From Friday 13th onwards if something isn’t correct on the new website you will have to fix it yourself manually.

    Site Refreshed

The evaluation website has been refreshed from the main TgR web site.

This is the last refresh planned before the site goes live next weekend.

Members emails on the new site are still disabled. But the new site is now live at http://www.tgr.net.au so that Google indexing starts.

Just over a week into our new web site and about 1/3 of our members have found their way to their new home.

To those who haven’t logged in yet – please remember the new web site uses your username (not email) as the login. Also your username must be entered with no spaces – use underscore instead (Mary_2 not Mary 2).

If you forget your login click on the “Forgot Login” link – which will then allow you to either find out your username (should you forget) or, more usefully, email you a new password.
