    Weight issues????

Posted by Anonymous on 04/04/2010 at 7:40 am

Hi everyone. As you may have noticed elsewhere in this forum I posted a small article about the fact that food cravings can be a side effect of HRT. What I want to find out here is in relation to weight gain, more impotantly some average thoughts/experiences.

I know that my body fat is re-distributing to a certain extent and that part I understand. My question is though, “did anyone else here find that their weight went up as a result or stayed the same just with a different shape?” I understand that everyone is different but like I said, I’m just trying to work out a bit of an average scenario so that I can get my head around (hopefully) where I’m headed with this side of things. From looking at my results, I think that I’ve gained about 2 kilos extra even though I’m still about size 8/10 like always, it’s weird.

Thanks for replying if you do, Peta A.

I’ve put on a few kgs recently but I put that down to too many Tim Tams and too much sleeping/loafing about.
Just today I came up with an awesome idea of buying a second hand exercise bike that I can park in front of my computer while I watch my…… ‘acquired’………. content. />_>” title=”>_>” class=”bbcode_smiley” /><br />
This post didn’t really answer any questions did it? meh! <img src=

I haven’t put on any weight since I started HRT late last year. I’m a little surprised, actually, ’cause they say you’ll probably put on a little weight, and I’ve been tucking in to the Tim Tams a bit when I get emotional – which happens a lot since I started taking T-blockers 😉

I’ve heard post-op is a bigger risk for weight gain. But yeah everyone’s different right *shrugs*. I really need to get onto that exercise bike idea pronto! Why are tim tams so good? I’m on 6-7 a day, so not good. :-/

    Hi Peta

I knew and understood the weigh gain problem before I started hormones. In part of my prep I went from 93kg of fat depressed person to 73kg of happy person with the expectation that weight gain would happen. I was size 10 in jeans/skirts and 12/14 in tops. I had no body shape, just a skinny pole, but loved my smaller size.

Hormones took me back to 82kg which gave me some body fat for my body to work with. I remained at that weight for more than 12 months, now after SRS I am starting to shed the extra weight, but I am more interested in body tone now not how much it weights. I am now size 12 jeans/ skirts and 14 tops. I dont think I will ever see the size 10 again as my shape is good there and it is just the way it is now. I dont want to be a bean pole just to drop a size.

    Hi Peta

I was 87kg when I decided I needed to treat my condition and was told about the weight gain. I set about losing weight and got down to 83kg. Then got hit by Christmas/New Year which saw me back at my heavier weight. So come February and the impending start on T blockers, I set about losing weight. Got down to 81kg and it stopped there again.

3 weeks ago I started Spiro and my weight has plummeted to 77kg. As part of the treatment, my doctor advised against drinking and starting a healthier lifestyle which I have taken him up on. I am also watching what I eat as well so I think the weight loss is due to many factors. I eat relatively healthily and still have the occassional tipple.

Can’t wait to start Estro but that is a few weeks away and will probably come with a bit of weight gain. I will wait and see.

    Hi Peta,

Since HRT I’ve put on a few kilos. Before I had a completely flat tummy and now it has a bit of a bump so that’s where the weight has gone on apart from my breasts.

I’ve never dieted in my life and previously have been lucky in being able to eat as I like but now I just eat more regular size portions and try not to snack (to much) so I don’t balloon out.

Just to add to this topic:

As you know nearly everyone is taking different drugs and in different doses for the HRT. These are the ones best suited to the individual concerned. So it is had to compare case by case. The Health professional I went to policy was “To get maximum effect with the minimum drugs”.

In my case I have had no weight gain due to HRT drugs as far as I can see. The minimal breast growth is only a few hundred grams at best. I started HRT in April 2007.

But as I say in this area of HRT everyone seems to be different.

    Hi Peta,

Regarding HRT and weight gain, here is what happened to me in my context:
-this is my 8th month into HRT
-before HRT I was 63kg, after HRT I became 59-60kg
-I work in a full time job which gets very busy at times
-I have regular hours of sleep and work
-before and after HRT I have always been doing exercises controlling my waist size… it is still happening now
-after/during HRT I eat about only half the amount of what I used eat (which was a lot back then)
-the cravings have become greater, but i have somehow ‘ignored’ them or at least part thereof

my weight decrease may be due to my muscle loss as a result of HRT… my lifestyle above was not and still is not conducive to too much weight gain… this coupled with my high metabolism has prevented my weight gain…

I do want weight/ fat on my hips though, especially laterally to give myself that lateral curve/hourglass figure… wouldn’t it be nice if we can choose where we want our fat to go? lol:-P

best of luck in controlling ur cravings too;-)

    cheers

Yep, ive put a bit of weight on too. I was about 77kg just before starting now im about 82 kg and its a battle to not eat too much. I crave salty foods, its just so annoying. I sometimes have a nice bit of chicken but then im craving more of it in a few hours. I still exercise but it has less effect. I used to be 90 kg a few years ago before i started regularly exercising though.

Just to add to the wealth of posts already ;-)

HRT doesn’t make you put on weight, but your appetite increases (some say they get cravings.)

Simple answer: your body is changing, HRT won’t make you put on weight, but it might make you hungrier and if you give into it, you will put on weight unless you increase your exercise to compensate.

Having been on HRT for more than 2 years I can tell you my weight went up then came down. Healthy food a little exercise was my answer… I’m now hovering around 81kg which my target is 80kg so I’m very happy (and so is my doctor.)

Thank you girls for your comments once again, if anyone else wants to post a reply then please do as well. I posted a comment elsewhere in this HRT forum saying about cravings and trust me, I do get them big time. Apart from the changes which will increase weight like breasts and so on I think that my cravings are the only issue mainly. Some nice thoughts here which yeah, I’ve taken in and appreciated all of them, you have all helped me tremendously so now I know what to aim for in the future.

    Thanks heaps girls, Peta A.

I used to be a steady 65-70kg for my motor sports, anything over 70kg and i was too heavy for the bike.
I started self medicating and went up to 72kg so i went to the endo and started on
    cyproterone
    progynova
    dutasteride
I then went up to 75kg
then i started progesterone and i blew out to 84kg,
My weight hasn’t moved around, i have just got fatter all over,
    I stopped progesterone (progestin) again.
Since going on hrt i have cut out heavy carbs like spaghetti bog etc.
I used to eat a kilo of the stuff, 50/50 meat pasta and then work out, maintaining 65-70kg
My diet has changed and so has my metabolism, now my female diet is more tuna and rye, intake is 50% of my male intake or less and im 84kg, omg

This is hard. Look out fat camp here i come, ground rumbling Maddy LOL…

After nearly four months I have stayed much the same as my usual 75kg. However, before she would put me on hormones my endo sent me off for a blood check which revealed a high cholesterol level. So, as I want as many girl years as I can get I have really altered my diet and hope that with the advent of the longer, warmer days of spring I’ll be back up to my usual km on the bike. I have really only been getting out on weekends this winter.

A good friend of mine lost 10kg after going on hormones but she reckons that was the result of losing muscle mass-she had been pretty darn fit as a boy. I do feel that things are redistributing though, even though the tape measure isn’t showing it just yet. When I get a movement of an inch or so somewhere you’ll hear my scream (Hopefully of joy!!).
