  • What about being offended?

On another USA Trans site I have been taken to task over the use of the term ” pack of cunts” in regard to the powers that be who are angling to change public opinion over gay marriage and such things as the Safe Schools program. I do not wish to enter into any defence of my word choice but have been thinking.
While I defend a person’s right to be offended by any given thing, I increasingly come up with ” so what?” as a conclusion. There is a tendency to think” I am offended therefore you must stop the action that makes me so”. As the range of things that may offend is as broad as people are numerous, I think that it is unfair and restrictive to want to make others change just because I am offended.
That said, I am a supporter of some degree of political correctness and I do agree that one should take care to not offend carelessly but at times one intends that offence and that is a fair thing if done with self awareness and are willing to face the consequences if any. In this Facebook/ Twitterverse, there is too much bad manners and cruel commentary and this is wrong IMO. My view is that I will not say something to someone online that I would not say face to face.

What has irked me in this case is the way the US has the facade of politeness,’ ma’am, Sir, bathroom not toilet, rendition not kidnap, collateral damage not murder ( no cunt allowed) and yet it is the biggest purveyor of pornography, thousands of poor, substandard health care for the disadvantaged, rampant gun crime etc. This smacks of hypocrisy to me.

Perhaps the choice of words distracted from the point of your post and wasn’t helpful in gaining support.
