What is it with Mascara ?
Posted by Anonymous on 31/07/2009 at 12:44 amHi girls……
I guess its fairly obvious that its not a good idea to use a cheap Mascara.
I recently spent $25 on “Loreal Lash-Architect carbon-gloss ” and much to my dissapointment I find it’s still like trying to apply boot polish with a toilet brush !!
Why do they make the brush-wands so huge to do such delicate work ?
And in browsing the make-up shelves, some wands are even bigger!
It doesent make any sense to me.
I think years ago I had one that was shaped like a tiny hair-comb and you could do it really nice and fine. But I cant find anything like this now.So, any recommendations, tips, etc would be very very much appreciated and will help me to not look like a Racoon!
Thanks heaps…Monique

Guest31/07/2009 at 9:58 amTheres a huge variety of Mascara’s both in the lower and higher price bracket. Some work well and some do not. I bought a Revlon mascara (3D extreme), it has a small brush and it always just always clumped on me. Other girls I do know like it.
I find its trial and error to find what works best. If I make a mistake I use a Eyelash comb to take away the mistakes or clumps.

Guest01/08/2009 at 8:07 amWhen I complained that my mascara had gone clumpy the lady in the made up deptment told me that mascara goes off if you dont use it.
I do like the tip from Anthea to use a eyelash comb if it does go clumpy.
So I dont know if the cheap stuff is just cheap or if its old stock, or if the lady was telling the truth, but I have found that even good brands start good and then I have problems with them later.

Hi Kelly,
I can assure you it certainly does go off if it is old and even still sealed up.
I had a small collection of mascara’s unused and sealed but between 12 months and 3 years old in my makeup draw. I think there were 3 of them. I went to use one of them and it was dried up, I tried all of them and they were all bad. I then persisted with the one I was finishing off till next time I was up at the supermarket to buy a fresh one.
So lesson learned, don’t buy mascara’s in advance.
Another tip on using Mascara’s.
You are supposed to dispose of them after 3 months of first use even if it is not finished. Apparently bacteria builds up on the brush and it can be unsavoury for your eyes. They recommend replacing them after about 3 months.

Guest07/08/2009 at 7:08 pmI’ll second Linda_Karen’s opinion on Rimmel. The tiny comb-like applicator makes it easy to separate while applying, and to reach the innermost and outermost lashes without making a big mess.

I recently spent $25 on “Loreal Lash-Architect carbon-gloss ” and much to my dissapointment I find it’s still like trying to apply boot polish with a toilet brush !!The people at MAC, use new “throw away” brushes in store and seem to get very good results. That might be due to infection risks, but it does have the effect that the brushes are always good and clean.
Maybe you could ask them if they sell the disposable brushes….?
Quote:Why do they make the brush-wands so huge to do such delicate work ?I don’t seem to have much in the way of problems, however with my long hair I have to clip it up out of the way or I get mascara on it (which is a real pain as then I get it on my hands or face if I’m not really careful).

PS: Just because I know there is a little bad/uninformed/clueless information going around here’s a tip:
All liquid/gel make up (especially mascara) have a “use by”. The “use by” is not the regular (food expiry) sense of a specific date, but more “3 months since opening” or “6 months since opening” etc..
The symbol appears (in most cases) to be a cylinder with an “open lid” and in the body of the cylinder you will see “3M”, “6M’, “12M” etc.. This refers to the maximum number of months you should keep the makeup for after you have opened it/used it for the first time. Another symbol I have seen is a black box with inverse writing (writing being “6M” etc) the contents of said box have the same meaning.
Mascara’s are usually 3 month expiry, exactly as Anthea said, and for the same reasons they have the expiry. Just be aware though, the expiry applies to most makeup and all (as far as I can tell) “wet” makeups.

(thanks to Clare and Louise for getting it for me for my birthday)I’m using Loreal “Waterproof Panoramic Curl” it has a longish (3-4″) wand, but I find it a lot better than the Clinique one I have (the wand on the Clinique one is only 2″ and mostly bristles, it makes it difficult for me to use.)

Yes applying mascara is certainly one of those many things that you wish you had learnt as a teenager or younger. What with the clumpy bits, the toxic bacteria (if you haven’t used it for a while), your glasses getting in the way (if you are long sighted) and I have the added problem of very fine (read almost invisible) lower lashes. As an aside I didn’t even know I had any (silly really) till I had a makeup session at MAC Paddington. a few weeks ago (recommend them by the way) Then again she was experienced, young and GG. Now where did I go wrong! Three strikes and back to the mirror. Better start practicing for the Ball now. But seriously girls some fabulous tips especially what those little symbols means. Each day you learn some more and it’s fun as well. Shame I can’t incorporate that sense of fun, wonder and achievement into my corporate training session…..boring. Thanks all I shall throw what I have out and start again! ps anyone had any success with the extra volume mascaras? I haven’t had much success but after the disastrous efforts of trying to apply false eyelashes and ended up with these two furry spider things attached to my cheeks I thought maybe the volume thing would work.

Guest10/08/2009 at 11:18 amHi girls…
Thanks for all your input. There is some great infomation here !I went and got the “Rimmel” Extra Super Lash with the small curved brush and it’s the best so far.
So much easier and cleaner to use than the other ‘toilet brushes’ which seem to come in two sizes ….. gigantic and huge ! lol !
Thanks….

Guest11/08/2009 at 8:00 amanother thing to try is to pull the brush out very slowly as this may reduce the amount on the brush.
Last time I used mascara I was in a hurry and it came out a gloggy mess.
Eye lashes stuck together with ugly blobs.Does it make a difference whether the tube is vertical or horozonal.
The last time the tube was horozontal and I think vertical may be better. And yes those brushes are huge, itś like eating ice-cream with a shovel 😉
It normally works reasonably well apart from missing the lashes and hitting the cheeks and lids. I can’t see what I am doing without specs too well.

Guest12/08/2009 at 1:58 pmYes clumpy mascara can be a real pain. One thing thats worked for me is to hold it under a hot tap for a few mins, seems to make it go a bit runnier, don’t think it helps with the bacteria though and not always practical.
Also, I always wipe off any excess on a tissue and do lighter coats, seems to help.

Guest08/09/2009 at 12:27 pmI have recently tried out a few Napoleon mascaras and they come with a decent brush applicator. I have one with a bent applicator and a few with a more conventional style applicator. Wonderful to use, but a little more pricey
