It presented pretty well all of the issues that arose from being TGA Landmark movie IMO which did a great deal towards greater acceptance of Transgender in contemporary Australia.

Good point Caroline. It was and remains a classic. Regards Marian

“Paris is Burning” tied in my first place with “Stonewall” (the original, not the recent, refurbished cop-out). Both are homages to the brave souls who’s sacrifices created the spaces we inhabit. Among recent movies I can recommend Boy Meets Girl (you will smile and, at last, we get to see a naked m-f transgender protagonist half way through transition – no punches pulled), Gun Hill Road (you will cry), Tangerine, and Man in High Heels (a really surprising Korean movie about a transgender cop). None of these movies are ‘fun’, but their reality is undeniable.

Thanks for the recommendations Veronica. Saw “Boy meets girl” recently. Great treatment of the subject and really sweet story. Rikky is so cute to. I’ll try to catch up with the others. Thanks again!

One of my all-time favorite movies, watched several times, was Kinky Boots which has now metamorphosed into a stage musical. Sadly I have not seen it. (sigh)

I must admit I did enjoy the 1992 movie “The Crying Game” The film is about the experiences of the main character, Fergus (Stephen Rea), a member of the IRA, his brief but meaningful encounter with a soldier, Jody (Forest Whitaker), who is held prisoner by the group, and his unexpected romantic relationship with Jody’s girlfriend, Dil (Jaye Davidson), whom Fergus promised Jody he would protect. However, unexpected events force Fergus to decide what he wants for the future, and ultimately what his nature dictates he must do.
However, the first film I remember about being Transgender was a British Film called : I Want What I Want. It was about a 20-something son of a military officer feels like a woman trapped in a man’s body. When he can’t hide it anymore he has a fallout with his ladies man father and leaves home.

Thanks for reminding me of both movies Bridgette. The crying game is also one of my favourites, and my favourite scene is the ending, as ‘Stand by your Man’ blares out ironically. As for “I want what I want”, I must recommend the book – it is far superior, far more honest about the internal life of transgender people, and was the first book I ever read about transgender issues.

Let’s not forget that The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert was the inspiration for the Broken Heels Festival as well.
Once I even got to stay in the Priscilla Suite at the Palace Hotel, the room featured in the movie.
The Danish Girl was a very disturbing movie which had a powerful impact on some cis-gender family and friends

If you google the title you will get all the details but it is wonderful, warm. funny, sad in parts but very uplifting. The movie was made in 2014 and obviously aimed at creating acceptance for young transgender people.
Well worth finding on ABC Iview

I thought ‘The Boy In A Dress’ was brilliant, unfortunately my guess is that it will fall on deaf ears and blind eyes; and yet?

Thanks Caroline for the timely reminder of a good T themed movie to watch this Christmas. “The Boy in the Dress’ is in the great tradition of BBC Christmas films – generally fun, feel good, with a touch of spice thrown in. We watched it last night on iView – light hearted but with a serious message in its soft underbelly. Nice movie!
