Hi Jessica, thanks for your thoughts on this. I imagine there are a few who have experienced this very situation and I, for one, agree on your reaction. In fact it has long fascinated me that any business could actively deny any increase in their turnover by refusing custom.
I have had two occasions where I went into a shop, one with a girl friend, we were both shopping for an after eight dress to wear to a social event in Melbourne. This was at an Anthea Crawford outlet shop in North Melbourne and as it had been a spontaneous decision to go in I was, sadly, in drab. I saw a dress I liked and showed it to my partner, she suggested, as there were no other customer in the shop, I should try it on. The assistant was on the phone and I girded my loins and asked if she minded, she just nodded to go ahead so I did and it fitted so I made the purchase, I can only imagine what direction the phone conversation took.
The second episode was In Melbourne Central. Again I was with a girl friend and we were having a girls day out, I was en femme. We were having a coffee and feeling happy I walked over to pay and the young lady said politely and firmly, ‘Thank you Sir’, with a smirk on her face. Of course this was upsetting and put a damper on the day.
Also, one more, I can’t stop, can I? Sorry.
I had ordered a tunic top on line from ‘Taking Shape’ otherwise known as TS 12-24, and had the option to collect.it at one of their shops. I was busy on the day so I had to do so in drab.
The item was addressed to ‘Claire Stafford’ but I had an authorisation slip for collection by another person, in this case ‘him’. While one of the two ladies in the shop retrieved the item and wrapped it the other one, an older lady, started making comments about making sure the item fitted and let me know where the changing rooms were. I was irritated at her attitude but didn’t let her have the satisfaction of knowing that.
Now I think I would probably adopt Jessica’s stance and tell her she was being inappropriate while asking about their turnover, I would also let them know I would be contacting the head office of their franchise.
