Guest23/06/2010 at 10:57 pmAmanda from Tassie, I feel that your post has “hit the nail on the head”. What you have said makes perfect sense, especially when I apply those thoughts to some guys at work who got nervous around me when I first came out and also when applied to the guy who treated me like dirt too. All of these people are now fine with working alongside of me because they now understand/know what they need to know in order to co-exist. Some thought that I was gay and some thought (mainly my enemy) that I was some sort of “freak” but now that they’ve come to realise that through their questions that I’m still the same person they’re fine.
It does take time for some to understand as we know but yeah, in the meantime……..well we do get some hassles!

Guest24/06/2010 at 8:43 amPeta, the thing is that everyone gets some hassles. In my conversation with people I meet , I find that everyone has a story of harassment at some time in their lives. This can be because of the way they look or what they listen to or drive or whatever. There will always be someone who will try to make themselves bigger by trying to make someone else smaller. Dare I say that even some trans people are capable of this.
As I said before, you can’t take idiots into account as they don’t act rationally , I am talking about the general public.
Humans are , by nature, xenophobic ( please explaaaiiin) and fear of the ” stranger” is part of our thinking . It is up to us to show others that we are as honest , as reliable , as decent as anyone else, that we are one of ” them” despite our differences.
I think that generally , people do not see us as freaks , it is a matter of familiarity rather than prejudice, as Amanda tas has said.
